Three days (47 miles) in the Seven Devils. The full loop, counterclockwise, with all the add-ons.

Views of Hells Canyon and the Wallowas from the lookout. A swim in He Devil lake. A summit of He Devil mountain. A mama bear and two tiny cubs. Spotting mountain goats on the ridge while making dinner. A very nonchalant fox that couldn't be bothered to let us pass on the trail. Aaaannnnnd, so many downed trees it felt like a true adventure.

This was one of the more rugged trails I've been on in a while — what a hidden gem of a spot. It's been on my list for years, but from the trip reports I'd read, I honestly thought it would be one-and-done. Okay, did it, what's next? Instead, I can see myself coming back many times over. I mean, we had a whole lake to ourselves on the 4th of July!

Finally got to backpack the Ruby Crest Trail in Nevada with Gus. 39 miles. 48 hours. 25 pounds on my back.

Always so grateful to be able to stake out the most stunning spots to camp on a map and trust that my body is capable of carrying me there.

Backpacking is hardly ever comfortable, but it’s always somehow the perfect remedy to restore my factory settings and sync back up with nature and with myself.

How lucky are we to live in a city where we can follow a whim to sleep outside and only have to drive 15 minutes and walk for an hour to be amidst the elk, deer, and marmots.

The Saddles Race is back on October 5, 2024, and it’s set to be an epic day in the trails. Founded by Satisfy Pro and Race Director Michael Versteeg, this race came to life because Versteeg believed Prescott deserved a 100-miler, and he had the history and experience to make it happen. The inaugural 2023 race was a huge success, with standout performances by first-time 100-mile winner Chelsea Kaderavek and hometown hero @ChadTrumbo, while in the 50-mile race, Nike EKIN @MelissaOstaszewski and Satisfy Pro @woah_Max took home victories. Now, Versteeg and squad are ready to welcome runners back for another legendary experience.

This ultra-distance race offers both 100- and 50-mile options, starting and finishing at the Fairweather Social Club. The course takes runners through the stunning landscapes of Prescott, Arizona, including the Granite Dells and the serene lakes of Lynx and Goldwater. It’s an opportunity to test your endurance while being part of a growing community of trail runners from near and far. Whether you’re here to push your limits or just to soak in the adventure, Saddles is the perfect race for those who crave grit, camaraderie, and the thrill of tackling northern Arizona’s rugged trails. #trailrunning #arizona🌵 🎥 @evolvetc @trailsandultras ✂️ @sean.haworth 📸 @gusgibbs taken in Prescott, Arizona by @gusgibbs

“to give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift - steve prefontaine” - @tracenknopp

the half @lakesonoma50 (26.2m) did not disappoint! experienced this classic californian race on a proper 🇮🇪 day. shared beautiful muddy miles and many smiles w/ @gusgibbs @rod.farvard @poleary87 & @swansonseth .

the folks at @healdsburgrunningcompany and @ginalucrezi put on a fantastic event and i hope to come back soon. for now it’s time to rest up, slam some @traderjoes sour scandinavian swimmers and get ready for 50 miles in a few weeks with @daybreakracing - i’m sure @therickfloyd has some ideas simmering 🥘

Next up on the @mountainenduranceteam elite roster is Gus frickin Gibbs @gusgibbs.
.
This gentleman has multiple Way Too Cool 50k podium finishes, and a top 5 finish at @lakesonoma50 in one of the most competitive years, 2019, to his name.
.
The guy’s personality is infectious. Anyone who knows Gus can testify to his genuine love for his friends, willing to do just about anything for them.
.
Welp now it’s time for us to give back to him, and support him as he steps back into the race arena. The trail running community is a better place with you in it.
.
I’m excited to see how training consistency and coaching support boosts his racing to that next level. This guys has SO much talent!

ANNOUNCEMENT:
I’m not hurt anymore. I’M NOT HURT ANYMORE! This is a big!

The last few years haven’t exactly gone to plan. Injuries are hard in so many ways. An injury can have a domino effect on many things around it. Mental health can add fragility to anyone, even me. Depression can look a number of different ways. I hope to be on the other side of what I was going through for the last ‘not so’ little bit. My mental and physical health are tied to one another and are likely forever intertwined, inseparable. Stubbornly, I was unwilling or unable to come to terms with what I was going through for quite some time.

Now though, I’m starting to feel ready. Ready to train intentionally. Ready to do the little things. Ready to build community. Ready to make friends and establish meaningful relationships. Ready to sleep more. Ready to take a nap if I need to. Ready to set goals. Ready to face my fears. Ready to be uncomfortable. Ready to ask for help. Ready to do continual maintenance so as to avoid future problems. Ready for hard conversations. Ready to listen. Ready to adapt. Ready to change. Ready to practice humility and be vulnerable. Ready to back down if I need to. Ready for personal growth. Ready to be a better partner, friend, relative, athlete, employee, teacher, cat dad, citizen, earthling. Ready to empathize. Ready to be kind. I’m ready to learn. I’m ready for YOUR wisdom. I look forward while still also looking back and taking what I’ve learned to make myself into a better Gus.

If you’re reading this, thank you for being a part of my journey. It’s not going to be entirely pretty, but it’s sure going to be worth it. Let’s hop on the stoke train. YEEEEWWWW!!!! 🚂

Also, if you’re reading this and are in a spot where a little help from a friend would be useful, please reach out. Call me. Message me. Let’s chat. ❤️
