please join me for this unique show sunday 11-2pm at the venue thunderbird hall (2856 frankford ave). this free show ($10 suggested donation) is part of @joshuamarquezmusic ‘s wonderful @chill.adelphia concert series. it’s my first solo presentation of this year and i’m using as a chance to get very loose and limber with a style of comedic musical performance i’m calling un/guided meditation

my set draws on an epiphany i once had almost ten years ago listening to enya while having an mri. through feedback loops, no-input mixers, a cdj and voice over narration, this show responds to the soundworld of that fateful day when i was caught in the eye of the machine. the result is playful exploring themes healing from tearing — and tearing from healing.

***it is hard to chill or produce a deliberate musical ambience when the greater extramusical environment itself is literally roaring from coast to coast in furies of flame, gust, and tide. please keep taking good care of one another. please also get the @leavingrecords compilation and run up @photay webstore / mutual aid options.

We are celebrating 15 years of sonic community organizing and music industry disruption on Sunday, Oct. 20 at the MAAS Building.

All ages are invited to enjoy a festival featuring two stages and seven hours of live music, DJs, and VHS visual projections.

The event will also center on a facilitated community conversation about the politics of record labels and independent artistry, with guests encouraged to engage with a flash library of reading materials in the ambient reflection garden.

The scene will be fortified by food, handcrafted drinks, free narcan distribution, and a merchandise boutique featuring curated highlights from Astro Nautico’s vinyl, tape, and VHS catalogs, fall apparel, and rare one-off releases, test pressings, demo tapes, and more.

Tickets cost $25 in advance or $30 at the door. The first 60 advance tickets sold will receive a free random copy of 12’’ vinyl from the label’s vault.

this week is the one year anniversary of caminante’s release into the world and THIS SUNDAY OCT. 20 @maasbuilding is the 15 year anniversary of @astronauticooo in the world 🌀🌀🌀 (link in bio)

b first wrote caminante in nicaragua during a time of deep change, inspired by the poem by antonio machado:: “caminante, no hay camino // se hace camino al andar // traveler, there is no road; you make your own path as you walk.” it became the first song we worked on together:: suddenly walking and creating a path to a song that had already lived and existed for a decade, in a time i was struggling to sing or trust the act of creating at all.

there is so much to say here about the healing or gratitude that comes from learning to trust in that kind of collaboration again, or complexly celebrating the release of a song that was originally part of a larger album set to release last autumn but didn’t in the hope of more immediately honoring and grieving with// for// alongside palestine. for now im leaning into the warmth and trust this song plants into my heart as we continue to time travel through our many stages of becoming:: cyclically archiving our griefs, joys, losses, and multitude of love(s). by @gutter_philosophy

I love the way songs love their own lives once they make their way out of our heads and into the world. “Til They’re Free” is a song that arrested my attention during a global strike for liberation, in solidarity with all oppressed people, including those in Palestine, Sudan, and Congo. Collaborating across state borders, my sweet friend and co-conspirator @radiokuhn remixed the Instagram recording and integrated amazing offerings by @moonkingem (vocals) and @paxressler (keys). @astronauticooo releases the finalized single today, mixed by @sam_o.b at Sway Studios, in response to and alignment with ongoing movement work by the artists and their communities to end genocide internationally.

All sales of the single will be offered to a mutual aid network supporting Palestinians emigrating from Gaza. You can also send funds directly: @adelyhaddad. Moving money in this way, we hope to honor the lives, testimonies and resilience of genocide survivors who remain in harm’s way and who have already made it clear what care and attention they need. “None of us are free // ‘til we’re all free” (Ella Baker).

It’s @bandcamp Friday, so fees to purchase this music have been waved; It’s an excellent day to learn a new singling song and to resource this struggle, in more ways than one.

We hope to amplify the rebellious mourning, radical joy, and steadfast caretaking of the Palestinian people and the growing student intifada in the heart of the imperial core. May those who give fuel to liberation movements today find yet another talisman of protection in this music. “One step at a time, all of us will move the line.”

@samantharise and i are opening an immersive installation as part of a group show organized by @thresholdcollective_ on the topic of grief.

i have dreamt of exactly this kind of collab and genre of event for ages. finally being in deep space with sam has me often smiling just to witness the uncanniness of our trust and wonder.

currently i’m under phenomenal duress (mortally dangerous infirmity in my family, the student uprising and encampments, finals week, and the arrival from nicaragua of my dear friend @cucul1979, who needs as much love and support in finding work and housing in philly as possible (dm with leads!). so i am immensely grateful to fight for time for/with sam, who understands the power of rebellious mourning and collective grief to explode common divisions between music/art and movement building, restoring us to patience and care at every turn even while responding to immediate community needs.

our installation features sound and music dispersed across 8 loudspeakers. in honor of my recently diseased neighbor keith, who helped me feel belonging not just geographically or musically but somatically and spiritually, i composed my first jazz suite. ‘elegy for keith’ features upright and piano by @leeclarkeonline, percussion by @cucul1979 and vocals by @samantharise. on eight speakers, it sounds like julius eastman’s ‘stay on it’ meets alice coltrane played through lamont young’s ‘dream house:’ pulsing, dissolving, and solidifying, like life in a tumbling way.

@ancientpuzzlearts just posted my ‘steadfast’ dj mix (🔗 in bio). i spent a week or so sinking into my cassette tapes for this project, digitizing as much of my library as i could find time for as a distraction from school and organizing.

this mix is the first product of that harvest, sounds coiled up the magnetic warmth of other times, bringing with them hopes passed by, secret messages unlocked through dialogue with current events (phil collins’ ‘one more night’ becomes a plea for ceasefire in gaza?) and new potentials.
