For the first annual Grief in Public Day, I wrote quotes about grief on the sidewalks where I lived in chalk. Then I joined my @salttrailsphilly sister @meghanadwyer to sit in a park with a sign inviting anyone who walked by to write what they were grieving and an offering of flowers and affirmations.

It was a simple yet powerful marking of this inaugural grassroots awareness day.

Our efforts since then have been more communal and detailed. The following year, we invited the Philadelphia Threshold Singers to join us in Love Park, the “heart of Philadelphia,” honoring grieving in public as revolutionary, wearing red, the color long associated with the revolutionary fight for freedoms and liberties.

Last year, we partnered with our friends @thresholdcollective_ and six incredible Philly artists to create an art and ritual installation around author and psychotherapist Francis Weller’s “Five Gates of Grief.”

But no idea, no offering is too big or too small for this day. It’s about all of us death workers, grief tenders and educators, healers and grievers feeding and weaving a new narrative of how we grieve and where it is safe and acceptable to do so.

It’s about amplifying our energies and creating a culture shift, one sign, one piece of art (visual, performance or otherwise), one grief circle, one ritual, one heart offering at a time.

I don’t need to tell you we have an immensity of loss, change and destruction to grieve. But I would like to remind you that to create the world we’d like to see, to sustain our efforts in this long labor, to stay connected to our compassion and humanity in the face of their daily erosion, we need to feel. And we need to grieve. There is simply no bypassing this sacred ground.

Link in bio for ideas and more details. Also sharing here the helpful ideas my friends at @invitingabundance offered last year.

!!THIS WEEKEND!!

We are celebrating 15 years of sonic community organizing and music industry disruption on Sunday, Oct. 20 at the MAAS Building.

All ages are invited to enjoy a festival featuring two stages and seven hours of live music, DJs, and VHS visual projections.

The event will also center on a facilitated community conversation about the politics of record labels and independent artistry, with guests encouraged to engage with a flash library of reading materials in the ambient reflection garden.

The scene will be fortified by food, handcrafted drinks, free narcan distribution, and a merchandise boutique featuring curated highlights from Astro Nautico’s vinyl, tape, and VHS catalogs, fall apparel, and rare one-off releases, test pressings, demo tapes, and more.

Tickets cost $25 in advance or $30 at the door. The first 60 advance tickets sold will receive a free random copy of 12’’ vinyl from the label’s vault.

this week is the one year anniversary of caminante’s release into the world and THIS SUNDAY OCT. 20 @maasbuilding is the 15 year anniversary of @astronauticooo in the world 🌀🌀🌀 (link in bio)

b first wrote caminante in nicaragua during a time of deep change, inspired by the poem by antonio machado:: “caminante, no hay camino // se hace camino al andar // traveler, there is no road; you make your own path as you walk.” it became the first song we worked on together:: suddenly walking and creating a path to a song that had already lived and existed for a decade, in a time i was struggling to sing or trust the act of creating at all.

there is so much to say here about the healing or gratitude that comes from learning to trust in that kind of collaboration again, or complexly celebrating the release of a song that was originally part of a larger album set to release last autumn but didn’t in the hope of more immediately honoring and grieving with// for// alongside palestine. for now im leaning into the warmth and trust this song plants into my heart as we continue to time travel through our many stages of becoming:: cyclically archiving our griefs, joys, losses, and multitude of love(s).
