We, as survivors, have been given the task to keep, cherish & share the stories of those who did not survive.

As painful as that may be, it's an honourable obligation, one that I am dedicated to.

The personal memorial I wrote about my former lover Jaime Jimenez (1962-1995), was chosen by the Foundation for The AIDS Monument (“FAM”), a non-profit which is building “Stories: The AIDS Monument” in West Hollywood, California.

STORIES: The AIDS Monument will memorialize the devastation of AIDS on our nation, and will honor the courage of activists, caregivers, and community leaders.

The Monument has recently been launched in West Hollywood Park, the most prominent public space in the City. It’s a work of art with global significance, and an iconic landmark for the City.

Thank you to the The AIDS Memorial for shining the light on my personal story.

Jaime Jesus Jimenez
 (18 May 1963 – 27 Oct 1995).

“That’s us in 1990 in a photobooth in the East Village, madly in love. I had just ‘landed’ in New York in ’89, illegally, & got a gig as bouncer & bar back @ The Bar in the East Village, New York. Jamie was the first to make a move on me. That fucken smile did it. That ride lasted 5 crazy years.

The stories are endless, but one I cannot erase, is bathing him at his weakest, in the last stages of his illness. That very moment, looking at each other, knowing this was it, I felt something shift in my chest. It was my heart literally aching.

Fuck I miss him”.

🇺🇸 “Gone 28 years today! — Jaime Jesus Jimenez (May 18, 1963 - October 27, 1995).

I had just ‘landed’ in New York City in 1989 (illegally) and got a gig as bouncer and bar back at The Bar an infamous queer hangout in the East Village where some scenes of “Cruising” where shot with Al Pacino. I met Jaime on my first shift. It was instant, our connection. Jamie was the first to make a move on me. That fucken smile did it. “Hey Babe, when do you get off work?” he says. “Wait in line, buttercup ...” I replied. That ride lasted five crazy years.

Jaime was the only man I ever fell in love with. He was insanely beautiful, inside and out. The stories are endless but one that I cannot erase is bathing Jamie at his weakest and in the last stages of his illness. That very moment, looking at each other, knowing this was it. I felt something shift in my chest. It was my heart literally aching. Fuck I miss him.”— by Guy Berube @guyberube1962 @lapetitemortgallery #livetotell #celebrationtour #whatisrememberedlives taken in New York City by @guyberube1962

‘There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature mor’.

The Jerome Foundation (a grantmaking entity originally established as the Avon Foundation in 1964), acknowledges these Minnesota and New York ties, while the Camargo Foundation(established by Jerome in 1967) occupies Jerome Hill’s properties in Cassis, and is now used as a residency center for artists and scholars.
