Today is the one year anniversary of my album Orchestrations 🩲 We are still standing. In something of a surprise celebrasie of its first solar rotation I have released a surprise live concert recording with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra closely tied to these sessions. Surprise! It was the very night that kicked off this whole debacle of orchestral works. This live track is now out on all reputable streaming platforms. It's also available on Spotify. And just like that I'm heading off to my favourite planet within the planet 🇮🇳 I haven't left South Africa since my last USA tour in February 2020. To be honest my desire to travel these last 2 and half years has been pretty min after two decades of constant missioning. Despite this, the unstoppable itch to return to India has prevailed. It always does. I'll be doing a bunch of shows through the country kicking off this weekend in Delhi before heading further East to Thailand for some more concerts. I'll update you along the way. In the interim, here's a snippet of a performance with my brothers @amjadtabla and @mudassirsarangi from our recent SA tour. Full 20 min video coming soonish.

I have a new album on the way 🫀 It’s a very personal, entirely solo collection of improvisations, recorded in a beautiful old farm church close to my home in KwaZulu-Natal. There’s a wide range of moods (and instruments) across these recordings, which I will unfold over three volumes. There's A LOT of music here guys. Volume One arrives on the 12th November. I'm probs a little bit late to the party here but I'd like to tell you that last week my latest album "Orchestrations" scooped up two South African Music Awards (@thesamas_) 💥 The record won in the Best Instrumental and Best Engineer categories. I thought that was rather nice. I've probably said it enough but the whole process of recording this project was a giant beast of a thing. More than I'd like to admit maybe. A mountain even. My body remembers. When your sense of self gets so wrapped up in it all, it's kind of hard to let go. It becomes something of a security blanket. A blanket that gets oddly familiar. With a particular odour. That keeps you warm. And then makes you overheat. And sweat. And elate. A strange thing. I am however genuinely delighted that the SAMAs saw something in it all. Truly.

When I am not on tour, I have little direct contact with humans and often don't see a lot of people on a weekly basis. Sun City, where they hosted the awards, is quite different from the farm. I think those water slides are absolute fire though. I did the twisty twirly one 5 times and lost my breath. But I found it again. I kind of like Sun City. It beats Vegas by a country kilometre. There's LEDs in walking shoes. And slots machines with bunny chows instead of cherries. Cheap incense and samoosas. With staff spritzing the plastic aloes. Who am I kidding? Farm life or not. I know my roots well. The burbs. Ha!

For my acceptance speech at the SAMAs I read a poem a very good friend sent to me that afternoon. I liked what it was pointing at. I don't think too many people got it. One person definitely did though. He was the wild eyed and verbose guy at the bathroom urinal clutching a zamalek. He got it for sure. But why I'm mostly mentioning the zen readings is because I never really took the opportunity to thank everyone properly. So I'll do that here if you don't mind.

It's with a whole giant truck-load of delight that I can finally announce I'll be doing a run of shows with the legendary @vusimahlasela 🫠 We kick off next month with our first 3 concerts in the fair Cape. After an 8 year gap, I'm real keen to be back performing at the @hiltonartsfest 🍂 Past concerts in that beautiful chapel have always been kept safe in my noggins old filing cabinet. This time around I'll be bringing my dear friend and multi-instrumentalist @quinsong8 for what will be our second full length concert together. Our first one was likely one of the most memorable shows of my entire life. True story. We have no idea what's going to happen. That's the point. I was tagged in a post yesterday that I initially totally ignored because I assumed I was "wrongly accused". I continued to go about my day. I then saw the comments coming in so I found myself looking at it once more but soon enough closed it down again. "Fake news", as they say in the classics. I then got an official email which I re-read a few times but was still skeptical so I finally did a search and it turns out it was true. My latest album Orchestrations has been nominated for Album of the Year at the South African Music Awards (@thesamas_). Wild! This is kind of dumbfounding given the experimental nature of the music. I have to say I am so very stoked to hear this about this record 🫀 The album took nearly a third of life to complete. And it's up for two other nominations this year as well. Thanks to all you peeps for giving it a spin. And so much love to all the fine humans involved too. Woohoo! 🩲
