Our Padnos Artist-in-Residence is speaking at CreativeMornings/Grand Rapids! ✨

If you’ve never heard of CreativeMornings, it’s a global community that brings creative people together for free monthly gatherings around a specific theme and features a short talk, coffee, breakfast, and conversation. It’s a chance to meet other creatives, hear new ideas, and find some inspiration. Here in West Michigan, we have our very own chapter in Grand Rapids (@creativemorningsgr) and each event is staged in a different venue.

On Friday, October 16, Jeffrey Augustine Songco (@songcoarts) will share his story about life and art in relation to the October theme of ALTITUDE. This theme was chosen by the Toowoomba chapter in Australia, and they say:

“Toowoomba quite literally sits above; perched on the edge of the Great Dividing Range. ‘Altitude’ speaks to elevated views, both geographically and creatively. It reflects the fresh perspective our community brings and the headspace we make for big ideas.”

Whether you’re an artist, designer, student, maker, or simply curious about creative work, come hang out with the Grand Rapids creative community. Everyone is welcome.

Friday, October 16
8:30 am - 10 am
Kingma's Market
2225 Plainfield Ave NE

Congrats to VMA Visiting Professor Cali Banks! 🎉

Cali has work now on display until November 7th in the Warehouse Gallery at Syracuse University. Below is an excerpt from the overall statement about the works:

"Merging ancestral, indigenous regalia and motifs with contemporary silhouettes, this work, "The Words Stuck In Your Throat Have Grown Teeth", touches on intergenerational transmission of knowledge and the adaptability of tradition through alternative photographic processes. The work moves through the space between photography and craft, where image becomes object and memory becomes material." by @gvsu_vma

Voyage Embarking Experience Spotlight!

To kick off the 2026 – 2027 academic year, hundreds of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences first-year students attended the College Welcome event in the Fieldhouse Arena. Students connected with faculty, staff, and classmates in their majors, explored opportunities for adding minors, made Voyage-themed origami boats, connected over games and crafts, and so much more!

This event was a great opportunity for students to begin to foster a sense of belonging to their community, learn more about the university resources, and feel welcome to the Grand Valley State University campus. by @gvsu_vma

Please join us in welcoming Jeffrey Augustine Songco @songcoarts as the 2026-2027 Padnos Distinguished Artist-in-Residence!

Welcome Event & Artist Lecture
Monday, October 5
11:30 am - 1 pm
GVSU - Kirkhoff Center
Pere Marquette Room

At the event, Jeffrey will share his past artwork and introduce his residency project titled “Our Island,” a new project exploring identity, power, and American belonging through a mashup of his childhood experience performing in “South Pacific” and his current obsession with the reality television show “Survivor.” Drawing from personal history, popular culture and mythology, Jeffrey is interested in how stories of love, war, and racism are rehearsed and performed in American culture. Good conversation and light refreshments will be served following the presentation. Read more about Jeffrey in a recent GVNext article:

Thank you to Kendra Stanley-Mills for sharing Maria Gambino's permanent garden, ReSolv, in a photo essay!

"Maria Gambino, the 2025-2026 Padnos Distinguished Artist-in-Residence, is leaving a lasting gift for GVSU: a planetary sculptural stone garden behind the Calder Arts Center on the Valley Campus.

Gambino, who is deeply inspired by the environment, started her role with the Department of Visual and Media Arts with a plan to work to create the garden. She worked on the installation throughout her time at Grand Valley and was excited about leaving this for the community.

Her hope was that visitors will contemplate the effect of the rotating planets on our world and how we are all connected as a result."
