Shadows can be so intriguing. They occupy no physical space, yet they exist all around us. We are so accustomed to our own shadow that it’s hardly something we pay attention to in our day-to-day lives.

One night this summer, I was walking to the bus station after a long day of working in the studio, and I noticed my shadow for what felt like the first time in years. It stopped me in my tracks — this eerie two-dimensional presence on the concrete in front of me — and (my mind still in full printmaking mode) I couldn’t help but picture it as a screenprint. (Ta-da!) As I continued marveling at my shadow, I suddenly experienced an interesting stream of thoughts. I won’t get too detailed about it, but essentially, it made me conscious of two things: 1.) (At the risk of sounding like a pessimist,) we are incredibly insignificant in comparison to the larger universe. And 2.) Looking down at my shadow, I finally saw myself as most others see me: a stranger — a quiet, blend-into-the-background sort of person. Likewise, I started having thoughts about how I am, in fact, a stranger to even myself at times. There’s SO much I don’t know about my own being…

First piece was the two week in-class still life we wrapped up recently which I got to hang in the Calder hallway. The second piece is a drawing I made for and gave to my Human Origins professor which I'd been working on off and on for weeks.

My first drypoint!

Inspired by a fleeting encounter I had a couple of weeks ago… Cruising down a long stretch of highway in between traffic lights, I randomly decided to check my driver-side mirror. In just a quick glance (no more than half a second), I saw what appeared to be the silhouette of a fox darting across the road, a little ways back.

I’ll never know for sure if I saw a fox, coyote, dog, or something else, but there’s something rather poetic about NOT knowing. Until the next time I (hopefully) see my spirit animal…

“Harmony” (linocut on kitikata paper, 16” x 20”)
Featuring purple salvia and three female ruby-throated hummingbirds (drawn to scale)💜🪴

There’s nothing more peaceful than a quiet walk around campus during the early hours of the day (when most students are still asleep after their late social gatherings the night before). For the past few weeks, it’s on these morning walks that I’ve encountered a startling number of female ruby-throated hummingbirds feeding on the salvia plants around campus…So, I was inspired to do a little research.

As I discovered, adult male ruby-throated hummingbirds generally migrate earlier than their female counterparts, explaining my earlier observations. I also learned that this species is known to be particularly territorial and solitary (which I myself relate to), so I was even more surprised to have seen as many as 3 or 4 hummingbirds together, at the same potted salvia plant! I had to turn this into a print!!

Good design, West Michigan history, print ephemera, snacks, and camaraderie with our peers. Not bad for a Friday afternoon, we’d say. 😎

Special thanks to the @graphicdesignarchives for hosting our students last Friday for a tour and a design class led by the Archive board! Great to see our peers at @calvin_graphicdesign @ferrisdsgn and @wmufrosticart too!

(And special thanks to Prof. Peterson for driving us and to Prof. Yabilsu-Anyaduba for curating the tunes)

A couple pictures from the Artist Reception the other day. Super excited to be in ArtPrize this year and I am super grateful for the support of my family, friends and instructors.

“Dissociated Reality” is up for display at the Collins Art Gallery on the 4th floor of the Raleigh J Finkelstein Hall (RFJ) in GRCC’s downtown campus. There are other amazing artists to check out while you are there.
