In the hours before GVSU’s commencement, our PA students (now almost officially Physician Assistants!) gathered for their annual program graduation at St. Cecilia Music Center. 🎓

Seeing everyone together, celebrating years of hard work, late nights, and dedication, was truly inspiring. Each of these students has grown so much, not just in knowledge, but as compassionate future healthcare providers ready to make a difference.

We are so proud of you all and can’t wait to see the incredible impact you’ll have in your communities! 🩺

CLINICAL SPOTLIGHT: Kelsey Gullick!⭐️

What was your most recent clinical rotation experience?
My most recent clinical rotation is Rural Family Medicine in Grant, Michigan! I get to see patients on my own, take their history, perform physical exams, then present everything to my preceptor and work together to come up with a treatment plan.

What did you do as a PA-S in this clinical experience?
I see patients for a wide variety of conditions and concerns. A lot of our focus is on diabetes, hypertension and weight management, wellness exams, and acute complaints. I also get a lot of hands-on experience with procedures like I&Ds, skin tag removals, injections, cyst removals, Pap smears, and more!

What is your favorite part about this rotation?
My favorite part has been the small-town feel and the continuity of care. I have truly seen how impactful it is for both patients and providers when a provider has cared for someone for years and really knows their history beyond what is written in the chart. They know what has and hasn’t worked for them, notice when something is different, and understand the patient as a whole person. There is also a level of trust that comes from those long-term relationships, and it has been really cool to see firsthand how much that can improve patient care.

What is something you’ve learned in this clinical experience?
I’ve learned how important it is to really know your patients and look at the whole picture rather than just treating one problem at a time. Especially in family medicine, so many things overlap, and every patient has different goals, barriers, and circumstances that can change how you approach their care.

Do you have any advice for pre-PA students?
Shadow as much as you can and expose yourself to as many parts of healthcare as possible! That can include PA students, PAs, physicians, nurses, insurance personnel, medical billers, and so many others. Just familiarizing yourself with medicine and learning the ins and outs of healthcare will help you immensely in PA school and eventually help you better understand and advocate for your future patients. by @gvsupa

CLINICAL YEAR SPOTLIGHT: Madeline Bartolotta!🩺

⭐️What was your most recent clinical rotation? Pediatric ICU elective at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital
⭐️What did you do as a PA-S in this rotation? In the PICU, I was able to follow 1-2 patients on the unit. This includes chart reviewing, performing a physical exam, presenting the patient during team rounds, and thinking about next steps in terms of assessment and plan! I’ve had a lot of support from preceptors/residents/attendings and learned a lot. Additionally, I got to follow along with new admissions to the unit.
⭐️What was your favorite part? I really appreciate the multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Morning rounds bring together providers, nursing, pharmacy, nutrition, social work, parents, and others to determine how to best care for each child. It has opened my eyes to the many moving pieces involved in caring for critically ill children. It is also incredibly meaningful to see these patients progress!
⭐️Something you’ve learned! I’ve learned so much about the management of critically ill pediatric patients. Being at an academic hospital has been especially valuable because the attendings take time to teach about different PICU topics and explain the reasoning behind treatment decisions. Since the PICU is very different from my previous clinical experiences, this teaching has helped me better understand not only what we’re doing, but why.
⭐️Any advice for pre-PA students? Get as much exposure to the profession as you can before PA school. Shadow PAs in different specialties, ask questions, and pay attention to what you like (and don’t like!) about different areas of medicine. by @gvsupa
