Now Open | Gwen Evans: Keeping the Vigil

On view at the gallery until Saturday 14th November. Open Thu/Fri 11am-6pm and Saturday 12-5pm or by appointment.

This is the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery debuting a series of new paintings by the Manchester-based artist. Throughout ‘Keeping the Vigil’ Evans offers a series of enigmatic glimpses into the private worlds of her protagonists, in which familiar domestic spaces become strange and elusive. Recognisable settings such as bedrooms, living rooms and household corridors become rendered through their imitations as uncanny doubles of themselves, forming a backdrop against which quotidian daily routines take on a disquieting atmosphere.

Group exhibition ‘Vow’ continues until the 22nd of February @20albertroad, Glasgow.

Presented by @slugtown_ , the exhibition interrogates notions of intimacy, connection, and adoration, considering how these qualities are negotiated within contemporary life. Across diverse practices including
painting, sculpture, photography, and installation, the works reflect upon how vulnerability can
be both a visual strategy and a political gesture. Together, the artists foreground tenderness,
devotion, and care as active positions, questioning how such gestures might resist dominant
structures and open new forms of relation.

I’m pleased to be exhibiting my paintings ‘Briar’ and ‘Vow’ alongside work by @jadesweeting #anaiscomer and @will_hughes_art_.

Very happy to be featured in the December issue of @thefourdrinier.

I enjoyed talking through my new body of work with painter @davidhancock73. Since forming a crit group with other Northwest-based painters, we’ve started to notice some interesting overlaps in our work, and we touch on those in the piece.

Thank you @y_a_n_ni for writing an accompanying text for my exhibition with @monti8_ and including me this month’s feature @art_verge. 🙌

‘Gwen Evans’s body of work looks like a creative extension of her inner world, which seems to carefully merge calm and luminous depictions fused by simplicity and emotional charge. Her artistic practice keeps her at the borderline of the familiar and the uncanny; converting ordinary domestic settings into metaphors of various emotional states. Whether showing a person hanging his laundry at dusk, or a ghostlike figure of a shadow behind the patterned cloth, Evans depicts compositions where the characters’ subtle gestures contradictorily convey a very powerful potency.’

Opening this Thursday 5:30-8pm, @monti8_, Rome.

‘The Space Between’

Reassuring reference points such as facial features are removed or obscured and ambiguous narratives render the characters inscrutable and their intentions unknown. This uncertainty leaves viewers to question whether the paintings capture a moment of quiet repose or the prelude to something more sinister.
