‘Keeping the Vigil’ @williamhinegallery

Exactly two years ago, I was here for the opening of William Hine Gallery, where Gwen Evans’ ‘TRYST’ was the inaugural exhibition. I was keen to see her new show, not realising until my return just how quickly those two years had passed - congrats to the gallery! 🙌

It’s a pleasure to encounter Evans’ paintings again, drawn to their hazy atmospheres, tactile textures and delicate interplay of light and shadow. Window frames echo the very edges of the canvas, creating a subtle dialogue between the painting’s physical boundaries and the interiors it contains. Patterned curtains, illuminated windows and carefully orchestrated perspectives draw us into dreamlike domestic spaces suspended between memory and imagination. With echoes of Edward Hopper’s contemplative interiors, Evans finds extraordinary visual richness in the everyday.

8 October - 14 November 2026, not to be missed.

Now Open | Gwen Evans: Keeping the Vigil

On view at the gallery until Saturday 14th November. Open Thu/Fri 11am-6pm and Saturday 12-5pm or by appointment.

This is the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery debuting a series of new paintings by the Manchester-based artist. Throughout ‘Keeping the Vigil’ Evans offers a series of enigmatic glimpses into the private worlds of her protagonists, in which familiar domestic spaces become strange and elusive. Recognisable settings such as bedrooms, living rooms and household corridors become rendered through their imitations as uncanny doubles of themselves, forming a backdrop against which quotidian daily routines take on a disquieting atmosphere.

The Contemporary British Painting Prize exhibition is open again this week (Thu-Sat 12.00–17.00) at Persistence Works. The exhibition brings together 15 artists selected from over 1200 applications, aiming to showcase the best painting currently being produced in the UK.

Three featured works by artist Gwen Evans (in order: 1. Vow, 2. Checkpoint, 3. Threshold, all 2025) impressed us with their inscrutability and atmosphere of disquiet, as well as their technique and confidence. Evans conjured a complete world that kept us talking and speculating in front of the canvases.

We are therefore delighted to have presented Evans with the inaugural YAS Exhibition Award. She will present a solo exhibition at Persistence Works in Spring 2027 — we think it will be really special and we can’t wait to share it with you.

@gwenevanswork

For now, visit the CBP Prize exhibition to get a flavour of what to expect and discover the work of 14 other brilliant painters, including winner @bend_laser and highly commended @christophercookstudio. 👏👏👏

The exhibition continues until 17 October.

I have a lot of love for @paintbritain so was very happy when they asked me to be a judge this year alongside @ryanmosley01 and Georgina Kettlewell.

We had the easy task but it was still dead hard because it’s such a strong show. I so loved having a full weekend looking at paintings, talking about paintings, and meeting painters. 💛

Thanks to everyone who entered, the exhibiting artists, the selectors @emmatod1 @rachel__lancaster @danielhbell_artist @ianandcanvas and of course, the wonderful CBP team, who give so much of their time and energy to run this Prize (voluntary) purely out of a love for painting 💚

‘These small-scale works drew us from across the room, offering glimpses of a private daily existence that are familiar to us all, while celebrating the pleasure of painting itself. What captivated us all was the way these familiar subjects, a cat, a tree, a figure, are transformed through Ben’s economical yet generous use of paint into something quietly mysterious and full of heart.’

@bend_laser won the First Prize (images 1-3) and receives £8,000 (generously donated by the @ken.kiff_estate ), a catalogue essay written by Georgina Kettlewell and membership of CBP. Ben will also be a selector for the Prize in 2028.

@christophercookstudio (images 4-6) won the Highly Commended Prize and receives £2,000.

‘We loved the slippery surfaces and the mystery of these intricate and intriguing paintings. The more time we spent with these works the more we were rewarded. All rendered in matte graphite black and ethereal white, we got pleasurably lost in the textures, details and mark-making.’

Many congratulations to @gwenevanswork (images 8-10) who won the YAS Exhibition award and will have a solo exhibition @yartspace in Spring 2027. I couldn’t stay away from your beautiful paintings and I can’t wait to see your solo show.

Congratulations also to @pippagattystudio and @melguatelli for both winning the Judith Tucker Memorial Prize, receiving £3,000 and £1,500 🤍

The exhibition @yartspace runs until 17 October, Thu-Sat, 12-5pm and will travel to Thames-side studio gallery. The PV is on Thursday 5 November, 6-9pm, see yas there 💚
