Join us on Wednesday, October 14 at 6:30 p.m. as we welcome award-winning historian Denver Brunsman, Ph.D., of @gwuniversity ( @gwhistory ) to discuss his new book, George Washington and His World, that provides a compelling, fresh portrait of George Washington. Enslaver and revolutionary, destroyer of Native American communities and father of American liberty, Washington filled numerous roles in the Founding Era. Rather than shy from these contradictions, Brunsman embraces them in explaining Washington to a twenty-first-century audience. Combining the latest historical findings with original primary research, this talk provides new understanding of Washington’s rise and influence by emphasizing the people and society who made the first president’s accomplishments possible.

(TOMORROW) On Tuesday, April 14 (7:15-8:30pm) in 328 Phillips, Visiting Professor Luiz Guilherme Burlamaqui will deliver a lecture entitled “The World Cup: A Political History.” Excited for this summer's World Cup? Come learn about its history first! The lecture will explore four key moments in the history of the World Cup: (1) its creation in 1930 as a political project shaped by tensions with the Olympic movement and as a tool for Uruguayan national projection; (2) the role of the World Cup during the Cold War, including its use in ideological competition and political propaganda, particularly in authoritarian regimes; (3) the long exclusion of women from the World Cup, highlighting how gender has structured the history of the sport; and (4) the 1994 World Cup in the United States as a turning point in the tournament’s transformation into a global commercial product, marking the consolidation of FIFA as a powerful global entity. by @gwhistory
