Nature rarely draws a straight line.

Throughout CASCADA Bend, architecture takes its cues from the organic forms found in the natural world. Walls curve. Openings soften. Daylight enters from unexpected places. Gardens and plant life become part of the architecture rather than decoration added afterward.

Designed in collaboration with HACKER, these spaces are an expression of the biophilic philosophy at the heart of CASCADA and SolTerra: that the built environment can bring us closer to nature, not separate us from it.

From the moment you arrive, the intention is to create spaces that feel less constructed and more discovered.

A first look inside CASCADA Bend.

Opening 2028.

A new concept in #cohousing, the street-facing side of the @ellenbrowningbuilding was reimagined as a modern interpretation of the traditional front porch. A sequence of outdoor terraces were designed to capture natural light and gradually recede from the street. This innovative approach not only fosters neighborly connections but also maximizes light, ventilation, and scenic views compared to a conventional street-facing structure.

A couple of Hackers on a recent tour of the under-construction @mosaiccommunityhealth Conners 2 project in Bend! The dowel-laminated timber (DLT) structure takes just two months to erect. Currently two stories, the project will soon get its third floor.

Opening next year, the new community health center will include specialty clinics, acute care, a pharmacy, and dental and pediatric care. Literally shaped by trauma-informed design and a reverence for healthcare workers, the project places both patients and caregivers at its heart, creating spaces that support healing, dignity, and well-being.

Architecture [Project] Night: Houses

THIS WEEK - Thursday, September 17 from 6-8pm
at the JK Gill building

We will be featuring a comparison of four homes designed by four Portland Architects.

How are the designs and processes of these four architects similar, or different? Beyond the particular project of the house, are the four practices exploring similar questions, or are they in different conversations all together?

Hosted by Duncan Scovil @duncanscovil (@waechter_architecture ) and William Smith @wfsmith (@drawings.dwgs ), this Architecture [Project] Night will ask the presenting architects to repeatedly engage and position themselves in relation to each other’s work.

Opening tonight, Hacker is excited to be part of UNSEEN PORTLAND ARCHITECTURE. Presented by @design.portland, the exhibition is a “survey of Portland ambition: bold designs and visions for the city and beyond that never came to be. More than 40 leading local architecture firms will present the best of their unbuilt work. In addition, design Portland will feature visions from Portland’s past.”

Conceived as a new global headquarters for Downstream, this unbuilt mixed-use office building reimagined a highly visible gateway site at the edge of Portland’s Pearl District. Occupying a distinctive triangular parcel adjacent to the rail corridor, the design transformed site constraints into opportunities for architectural expression. A sculpted mass of stacked planes was carved and pulled apart to frame views of the Willamette River, Broadway Bridge, Union Station, and the surrounding urban landscape. The building’s composition of solids and voids brought daylight deep into the interior while creating a dynamic workplace organized around visual connections, transparency, and collaboration.

Opening on September 3rd from 5-8pm at the J K Gill building at 408 SW 5th Ave, UNSEEN is on view through October 17th with the exhibit open Fridays and Saturdays from 12-6pm.

Soaking up the last of summer in the central #courtyard at @hollowaypdx, a new 229-unit apartment building blending the industrial past with active city living.

Clad in weathering steel panels, the 7-story building’s form is bent and rounded, reinforcing the natural and historical character of the past by evoking the natural forces that formed the adjacent Sullivan’s Gulch while honoring the rounded corners of the existing art deco and Streamline Moderne buildings of the neighborhood. Step inside @sisterscoffee’s newest location on the ground floor of @jackstrawbend. The café continues the evolution of the company’s brand, drawing from the high-desert landscape, the site’s history as an early lumber mill, and the company’s log-cabin beginnings in Sisters, Oregon.

The exposed concrete structure and the expressed life cycle of wood—from natural to milled to crafted states—reflect Central Oregon's industrial past. Warmth and careful detailing reinforce the company’s mission to create an authentic coffee experience rooted in craft and kindness. Link in bio.

Perched on the rooftop and designed around the extraordinary landscape of Central Oregon, The Conservatory brings water, abundant plant life, natural light, fresh air, and expansive mountain views together in one immersive wellness environment.

Indoor and outdoor pools flow across the rooftop, while a glass-enclosed conservatory creates a year-round connection to the sky and surrounding landscape. Above, an integrated solar canopy filters sunlight into the space while helping generate energy for the building.

It’s biophilic design at the heart of CASCADA: not simply looking at nature, but creating places where you can feel immersed in it.

Morning sun. Snow falling outside. Warm water and mountains on the horizon. A rooftop oasis designed for every season.

Opening 2028.
