These shovels are making room for a lot more stories! 🪏📚

Today, our community celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Washougal Community Library. When it opens in 2028, it will offer nearly seven times the space for discovering books, gathering with neighbors, and finding a place to belong.

This moment took years of planning and people who kept believing. Thank you to our voters, donors, Friends of Washougal Community Library, FVRL Foundation and community partners for making more possible.

From a reading room in a general store more than a century ago to the 14,000-square-foot library we’re building together today, Washougal’s story keeps growing.

A fireplace shaped by the beam above it...

Episode 126 | Black Butte Ranch Lodge

👥 @hackerarchitects

In this clip, Corey Martin, Principal Designer at Hacker Architecture and Interiors, tells the story behind the Lodge’s copper fireplace shroud. The original design called for a simple cone rising to the ceiling. During construction, the team found a primary structural beam sitting right where the flue needed to go.

Rather than force the original plan, the team studied a range of structural options. They worked through a series of iterations to reshape the cone and route the exhaust around the beam. The result is the asymmetrical, hourglass-like form that now anchors the room. Corey credits the client for being open to the change, and in the end, everyone liked it better.

ساختمان Ellen Browning | Ellen Browning Building

Last Friday, the GLAS team took a break from the office and road-tripped to Oregon Coast Community College’s Newport campus to tour the OCATT Center construction site and check out the freshly installed acoustic DLT roof system. Lease Crutcher Lewis guided us through the 26,000 sq ft mass timber structure while Principal Architect Christopher Walkup went over GLAS Architects’ + Hacker’s design concept, key program elements, and the long-term weather-resistant assemblies demonstrated by the exterior envelope mockup. The weather was great and the day offered everyone a moment to step away from their desktops and witness the built impact of our work as it comes to life in the outside world. —with @occcsharks, @lewisbuilds and @hackerarchitects

Architecture [Project] Night: Houses

THIS WEEK - Thursday, September 17 from 6-8pm
at the JK Gill building

We will be featuring a comparison of four homes designed by four Portland Architects.

How are the designs and processes of these four architects similar, or different? Beyond the particular project of the house, are the four practices exploring similar questions, or are they in different conversations all together?

Hosted by Duncan Scovil @duncanscovil (@waechter_architecture ) and William Smith @wfsmith (@drawings.dwgs ), this Architecture [Project] Night will ask the presenting architects to repeatedly engage and position themselves in relation to each other’s work.

With:

Corey Martin: @hackerarchitects
Lisa Kuhnhausen: @office.kuhnhausen
Chris Brown: @observationstudio
Jennifer Bonner: @jenniferbonner_mall

If you live in one of the 166 units in BrookLand Apartments by @hackerarchitects , you get to walk to your apartment through one of two wood-clad, wedge-shaped courtyards, passing hanging plants and sitting areas and peek-a-boo views to the outside world, then (probably) enter a unit with windows facing in multiple directions. Better than a hallway :-)

Perched on the rooftop and designed around the extraordinary landscape of Central Oregon, The Conservatory brings water, abundant plant life, natural light, fresh air, and expansive mountain views together in one immersive wellness environment.

Indoor and outdoor pools flow across the rooftop, while a glass-enclosed conservatory creates a year-round connection to the sky and surrounding landscape. Above, an integrated solar canopy filters sunlight into the space while helping generate energy for the building.

It’s biophilic design at the heart of CASCADA: not simply looking at nature, but creating places where you can feel immersed in it.

Morning sun. Snow falling outside. Warm water and mountains on the horizon. A rooftop oasis designed for every season.

Opening 2028.

A multifamily residential building in Portland, USA, is an inspiring example of cooperative housing created by a group of older adults who came together to build their ideal home.

Instead of purchasing ready-made apartments, future residents collectively decided what their building should be like. This approach allows people to create a living environment that truly reflects their needs and lifestyle.

Architecture: the project was designed by @hackerarchitects . The building consists of individual residential volumes separated by green terraces with pergolas, creating spaces for relaxation and community interaction.

The façades are made of fluted ceramic panels in a soft cream color, giving the building a unique character. Due to Portland’s rainy climate, ceramic cladding was also a practical choice — a durable material resistant to moisture and requiring minimal maintenance.

What do you think about this approach to housing? Would you like to live in a building designed together with its future residents?
