In 2005 Sui Jianguo put the Zhongsan suit that is so closely associated with Mao onto Myron's ancient Greek 'discobolus' (the discus thrower) statue. East meets West (or blows up those distinctions?), ancient meets modern, bleached white marble gets a zany paint job, and naked athletics gets a new uniform. Thanks to Jay Lin, who is off to med school, for introducing me to this one! by @hackingtheclassics

'Deluded people cave in'. Not sure if that is the title of this piece by Kara Walker (standing at right), but that's the phrase. Those words have a wild story from the US Civil War, but especially as part of Walker's silhouette sieres of backlit images, this also riffs on Plato's Cave. by @hackingtheclassics

The US and its neoclassical infrastructure - both symbolic systems of power that demand critical response and analysis. So happy to be finishing a great semester of teaching largely about hacking the power dyncamic of classics, classicism, and neoclassicism. So many luminaries that have helped my students get the message - Rita Dove, Toni Morrison, Kara Walker, Sanford Biggers, Harmonia Rosales, Kehinde Wiley, Saidiya Hartman and many others! by @hackingtheclassics

Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer?! Sanford Bigger's 'Janus' is a great spin on the ancient Greek Janus-style kantharos (or drinking cup) with contrasting heads looking out from each direction. A student in class today suggested that Biggers chose these two because they were both one-hit wonders with more style than staying power. by @hackingtheclassics

Today in class we get to discuss Awol Erizku's 'Their Eyes Were Watching God' (2017). I love this piece in part because I don't have it figured out. Nefertiti, Black Panthers, Hurston, Greek column, super basic color palette...what does it all add up to? by @hackingtheclassics
