Hopefully you were able to guess that the answer is... PERCY JACKSON! That's right, BSIC is going to have a Percy Jackson themed meeting to kick off 2024! With the TV adaptation making its debut, it's a perfect time to talk about the history, mythology, and general background of this iconic series as well as how it relates to questions about diversity and difference. Even if you haven't read the books (Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians) or watched the show, though, feel free to come for some good discussions and learning! Happy (almost) New Year and see y'all soon! 🥳🌊

Hello everyone! We hope that you’re all having a wonderful start to the school year! In the wake of the recent Netflix show about Cleopatra, we’re going to have a meeting discussing some of the questions surrounding this famous queen, namely her background/heritage. It’ll be a super low-key meeting, but make sure to tell your friends and maybe check out this article as a little preview:

Hi all, it’s been a minute!! BSIC is having a meeting to wrap up the school year, and we’ll be having another wonderful guest speaker, Nadhira Hill! Her work in Classics is fascinating, and she just recently finished graduate school/will have finished by the time we have our meeting, and we’re really looking forward to hearing her wonderful and unique perspective! We hope to see you all there in a couple weeks!

Happy February (and Black History Month)! BSIC is going to be having a meeting on President's Day (February 20th) at 6pm. We'll be doing a Part 2 to our Q and A panel from last December but this time, with a senior studying Classics from Ohio State University who'll share her experiences as they compare to somebody studying Classics at an HBCU (our wonderful co-leader Katlyn). It should be a super interesting and informative time, and we hope to see you there!

Attached here is also a link to a fascinating article with some interesting pieces of art as well as some big names and groups mentioned (https://classicalstudies.org/scs-blog/nina-papathanasopoulou/blog-black-classicisms-visual-arts); you might see some of the future images on the highlight from this piece. 😉 Happy Holidays, and we can't wait to share this and our other initiatives with you!!

Long time no see! BSIC is thrilled and honored to be welcoming Dr. Caroline Stark as our first guest speaker! Dr. Stark teaches at Howard University, where there's been some news recently about the Classics program and its future. We'll be discussing this situation a bit in our upcoming meeting with Dr. Stark (which will be on September 19th at 6 pm if you're interested), but in case you'd like to get a little info beforehand, we've attached some links to various articles/Op-Eds covering the situation. These were recommended by our mentor Dr. Hawkins, who says that the articles "all give rather different insights into the importance, relevance, and role of Classics in contemporary academic life," something always important to consider and discuss! :)
