Happy Dolly Day! 💖 Somehow we’ve already made it a whole month without one of our brightest lights leading the way. While we continue to grapple with her loss, we acknowledge what a gift it was that our stardust landed on this planet at the same time as Dolly-freaking- Parton’s.✨

Of course, her legacy lives on through the generous work of her greatest achievement, the @imaginationlibrary, and in every member of @thekreweofdolly who aims to walk in her heavily-sequined and hair-sprayed footsteps.

As a proud returning member of @thekreweofdolly I’m working alongside my fellow Dollys (and Support Kennies & Willies!) to expand the Imagination Library throughout the state of Louisiana. (And Lord knows we need all the books we can get down here. 👀)

Did you think I would only ✨tell✨ you about the time @brandicarlile collectively summoned 20,000 souls and the spirit of Dolly (and Whitney, too!) with her “I Will Always Love You” tribute last Saturday in Nashville? So much has already happened in the time that it’s taken me to find these words, including a (pre-planned) trip-turned-pilgrimage to the Dolly capital itself.

As we continue grieving the loss of one of our greatest teachers, and devastatingly, others along with her, in a season of sorrow that doesn’t seem to be lifting anytime soon — may this question be our guiding light:

“What Would Dolly Do?”

I think she’d start by showing up in the sparkliest outfit she could squeeze into, eyelashes secured and hair sprayed to high heavens, and smile at the dirty joke she just told herself, and wink, knowing she’d get the last giggle at anyone who thought they could dull her shine.

We will always love you, Dolly, thank you for so generously showing us all how. 🦋

For the rest of us, it’s our duty to bear witness and carry the burden of what we see and hear. To take it in and let it forever change us. They only win when we look away or harden our hearts to suffering. We’ve tried to be good, play nice, sit pretty and it’s only emboldened their evil. May those responsible for this horrific nightmare never know a moment’s peace until justice is served. by @hailsyeah

The second to last line originally read “Perhaps it’s that we’re the only species actively participating in its own extinction.” but then I removed it because it was too… dark?? But how else can we describe what we’re doing to ourselves down here, along our way to becoming mushroom food. The only question is what else we’re willing to destroy in the process. by @hailsyeah

Lowe-ssez les bon temps rouler!🎶🦪🌳🌞

Our first official Lowe (Rubin, Holt, Ray, Cebular, Fynaardt) Family Reunion was a success and we were lucky enough to welcome everyone to our favorite town during the very best time of year ⚜️

We shucked eight dozen oysters, sipped and snacked our way through the city, celebrated birthdays, took a walking tour, introduced spouses, met the next generation of cousins, and stayed out dancing way past all of our bedtimes— because in the clurb, we were actually all fam. 💛

POV you were a stray with some serious street cred and then you got adopted into a family that insists on wearing coordinated costumes in the Mardi Gras dog parade every year 😜

The Puparazzi took to the runway with the @mystic_krewe_of_barkus today. Our CANINE cameras didn’t quite make it out of the gate and our lead Press photographers spent most of the time in front of the lens, but the weather was in our favor, the treats were flowing, and the streets were filled with many familiar faces! 🤗

That’s officially a wrap on Carnival 2025 and what a season it was. The amount of love, joy, time, energy, money, and creativity that the people of this city pour into every parade and event is truly remarkable. Planning, practice, costume making, and float building takes place year-round for a few hours of entertainment. And the spectators who still turn out to show their support despite traffic, parking, crowds, chaos, and parade-tracker delays make it all worth it.

Only 302 days ‘til it all starts again! 💜💛💚

I had so much fun marching with @krewedurouxge in my first @redbeansparade on Lundi Gras and meeting so many fellow rebellious book lovers along the way! 📚

As the world continues to feel dark and heavy, I keep looking to the artists. I look to the writers, painters, sculptors, poets, performers, and creators who are committed to bringing truth, hope, beauty, and love into the light. Who use their own voices and volition to help us all better understand what it means to be human.

Art is history made tangible. It’s a moment in time that we can experience long after it has passed. Art is evidence of where we’ve been and it can help us decide where we want to go. Art is language, language is freedom, and, of course, freedom is power.

This is why, throughout history, art has been attacked first. By silencing artist’s voices, power-hungry politicians have continuously tried (and failed) to erase their stories— and yet our museums and libraries hold pieces of clay, paper, and pigment (arguably some of humankind’s most fragile materials) that have outlasted dozens of dictators and dynasties. 🤭

Art literally puts power back into our hands whenever we pick up a book or pen or brush, or buy an admission ticket to witness another artist’s work. Art provides us with the power to choose whose voices we listen to and what world we live in.

So keep looking to the artists, surround yourself with stories, #readbannedbooks, and while you’re at it, go give your local library and museums some love. 🥰
