Join us for a panel discussion on democracy, security, migration, and regional impact as Haiti approaches a pivotal electoral moment with implications far beyond its borders.

This virtual panel discussion will examine the political, security, and institutional context shaping Haiti’s elections, including governance challenges, public trust, and the role of the Provisional Electoral Council.

Breve immersion dans la francophonie torontoise ce weekend

Vendredi 27 mars, petite virée dans les très beaux studios de la chaîne éducative francophone de l’Ontario, @onfr_tfo, accompagné du très cher @rudychabannes , Premier rédacteur et journaliste de la station. Merci pour le joli sac, Rudy !

J’en profite pour vous inviter à (re)découvrir l’article « Les francophones des Amériques convergent en Louisiane », signé Rudy en mai 2023, et dans lequel apparaissent la très influente @mareva_cestor (que je n’ai raté la chance de revoir) et moi.

Le lendemain, c’est dans un tout autre registre que j’ai poursuivi mon immersion culturelle avec la rencontre du très courtois poète Gabriel Osson [@gabrielauteur], romancier, artiste-peintre et chroniqueur francophone né à Port-au-Prince. Quand j’animais l’hebdomadaire culturel « PluriCultures » sur Radio Vision 2000 à Port-au-Prince, je parlais souvent du symbolisme de son œuvre qui représente, à mon avis, le cumul de l’aphorisme éluardien, à savoir ‘’La poésie doit avoir pour but la vérité pratique’’ pour souligner l’engagement de la poésie dans la réalité sociale.

Ce qui nourrit fort bien l’œuvre de Gabriel à travers des thématiques abordées comme le « restavèk » où son roman Le jour se lèvera (Éditions David, 2020) qui traite de l’atrocité de la dictature des Duvalier. taken in TFO by @haitiancreoleprogram

Today, on Haiti’s Independence Day 🇭🇹, I am releasing a short documentary that explores linguistic discrimination and the lived experiences of Haitian Creole speakers.

Healing in our Language is about memory, identity, and healing through Kreyòl—because a language we are taught to reject is still a part of who we are.

This project was made possible with the support of the Endangered Language Project through their Ready to Revitalize grant. I was selected for this language revitalization program, where I received training on how to design and carry out projects centered on language rights and justice.

As part of this project, I organized a two-day workshop on language experiences in Haiti, where we reflected on the role of language in politics, education, and society—as a tool of dominance, exclusion, inclusion, reconciliation, and, most importantly, healing.

I am deeply grateful to Websder Corneille, adjunct lecturer at Indiana University and founder of the Haitian Language Program, for joining me on this journey and sharing his knowledge, perspectives, and experiences with language work in the United States.

Thank you as well to all the participants and to everyone who contributed and those who believe in language rights and justice as a powerful way to reconnect and reunite the Haitian community.

In @smallaxeproject salon’s fiftieth issue, Dr. @dr.evan.auguste and I shed light on the life and legacy of the pioneering Haitian psychiatrist Louis Mars, son of the renowned ethnographer Jean Price-Mars.

Louis would have coined the term “ethno-psychiatry” on the ground in Haiti in the twentieth century, although his recognition is far from being acknowledged. The new issue also pays tribute to Danielle Legros Georges, another Haitian writer and thinker of distinction who transitioned into an ancestor in February.

🗣️ Join @catalystnowofficial and us this Friday, Nov. 7th at 10am ET, as we weigh into the transformation of the educational system through historic and community-based approaches.

My argument will consider @anseyepouayiti ‘Teach for Haiti’, a 10-y civic movement that has fostered hundreds of partnerships within the primary school system in rural Haiti to promote the native Creole language and culture's use in the classroom. The success of this disruptive model that favors ‘Lekòl andeyò’ (rural schools)— with no discrimination towards urban ones—, holds the power to modernize the curricula in a decolonial context.
