《The Nuance :

《The Nuance》

—

Beginning October 10, KiNN presents The Nuance, a group exhibition exploring the subtle shifts in perception that emerge within a single form.
Here, ‘nuance’ refers to a subtle difference sensed within a form—a shift in perception. It emerges through the interplay of form, structure, materiality, space, and the gaze, allowing the familiar to unfold into different impressions.

Sungjun Park, Younghyun Lee, Hakmin Lee and Sakai each bring a distinct formal language to the exhibition. Rather than converging into a single aesthetic, their works retain their individual logics while creating different layers of perception within a shared space.
When a single form resists settling into a singular impression, the familiar opens itself to other possibilities of perception.

기획: 아워레이보 @our_labour , 추성아 @s.serena.choo

Have a Seat reconsiders the relationships between artworks and people, bodies and space, through the everyday act of sitting. “Sitting objects,” each with distinct forms and materialities created by different artists, gather around a single long table. As visitors sit, pause, and spend time with them, the works shift from objects of contemplation into mediators of relationships. As individual seats naturally become shared places, Have a Seat proposes an open, welcoming communal space where people can linger, converse, and share time with one another.

Hosted and Organized by Busan Museum of Art

Brass

Originating from the spatial context of Oliveyoung @oliveyoung_official Beautymansion Seongsu, this work translates the formative language of a red brick facade into brass frames and panels. Rather than imposing complete control during annealing and hammering, it embraces natural deformations and gaps, bringing the raw traces of handcrafted fabrication directly onto the surface.
To join the structure, the piece utilizes exposed Bold Bolts, turning functional fasteners into decorative elements. This intentionally blurs the line between function and ornament, allowing the structural construction itself to operate as an essential component of the artwork.
Over time, the raw brass naturally oxidizes and patinates, transforming the piece into an evolving object that continually records time, space, and human touch. Ultimately, it encapsulates the temporality and locality of Seongsu within a form of object.

Hakmin Lee (@hakmazing) is a Seoul-based designer and one of the most fun voices working in Korean design right now.

He runs studio HAK, where the thinking goes that people connect deeper with objects that carry a bit of wit and breathing room, rather than being flawlessly serious. When a familiar piece of furniture unexpectedly throws a bit of humor at you, it brightens up an ordinary day.

The heart of his work is in subculture. Toys, cartoons, and characters are where he believes the public feels enjoyment in the most intuitive and pure way. Rather than the grand aesthetics defined by design history, he sees visual languages like Haribo jellies, emojis, or bolts and nuts holding a stronger emotional connection for people today.

He’s fascinated by the uncanny energy that comes when the boundaries between high art and subculture blur, and mass-produced, kitsch elements get remade within a craft context. It’s a philosophy that puts him at the complete opposite end of the contemplative, material-driven register we usually see in Korean design, and it’s exactly why we love his work.

The craft underneath is what makes it all believable. Hakmin trained in metal craft at Kookmin University before conceptual design at Design Academy Eindhoven, and both live in his process today. Each piece starts with observing the ordinary plastic objects and icons around him, then moves through hand drawings and 3D modeling, prototyping with 3D printing and hand-crafting, and casting at an aluminum foundry. Back in the studio, every piece gets hand-polished, sanded, and refined until it comes together as a finished object.

We talked with Hakmin about his path from Kookmin to Eindhoven and back to Seoul, his years designing for Anthropologie, and where studio HAK is heading next.

Focusing on states and sensations that persist within the repetition of everyday life, STILL brings together works by Hakmin Lee, Jongwoo Ahn, Kyuhwa Moon, and Nayeon Woo. Across painting, printmaking, photography, and object-based works, the artists approach repetition, residue, and suspension through distinct visual and material structures.

The exhibition considers scenes that appear still yet remain charged with lingering presence, tracing sensations and states that continue to persist beyond their moment.
