During the American Revolution, Georges Island’s fortifications were quite different from the ones you see today. They consisted of a series of earthworks bustling with 48 cannons of different sizes. The island and its forts were reshaped and rebuilt numerous times throughout history, but its military purpose always remained the same – to defend Halifax Harbour from naval attacks.

Did you know the Halifax Citadel as we know it today was completed 170 years ago this year? Construction of the current Citadel began in 1828 and took nearly three decades to complete, with the star-shaped fort finally finished in 1856. 170 years later, it still stands proudly over Halifax, preserving centuries of military history and offering one of the best views in the city. ⭐️
