Get planning, people!

Barb Downey of Downey Ranch has a message for ranching families who haven't had the succession conversation yet. The next generation is watching how you adapt, and that might just include the technology you're willing to try. 😉

Look up! Halter’s virtual fencing for beef is now powered by satellite.

No towers or cell tower coverage needed.

To the beef farmers and ranchers who have been waiting for virtual fencing that can go further, in remote areas, extensive beef country, public land, leased ground and more, we built this for you.

Sky’s the limit now. by @halterhq

In Kowhitirangi, New Zealand, it rains AND it pours 🌧️

Radha and Sameer had to learn fast when they moved to the West Coast of the South Island. Farming when you’re getting 250mm of rain each week in spring is no picnic.

Just driving into a paddock to get the cows out was bad for the grass, the bikes would get stuck, and pugging (the severe damage from cows' hooves on wet, soft soil and pasture) meant the grass took months to recover.

When they decided to get Halter, they realised they could do a lot more than virtual fencing. The remote shifting and pasture allocation have meant that Sameer can easily move the cows out of paddocks and onto the feed pad multiple times a day if he needs to.

By shifting more often and precisely allocating the pasture area to suit his herd, Sameer is protecting the grass and setting the farm up for a faster recovery from the rain. by @halterhq

We recently got the Beef Pro package with our @halterhq VF collars. This is one of the features that have been interesting to see. It really tells the tale of how the cattle graze at night along with resting during the and how that changes depending on where the sun and time of day is. in the morning all the cows walk to the top of of pasture (east) to catch the first rays of the sunshine in the morning before retreating to the shade and resting.

We can also see how a cow K05 behaves before she calves and how she acts after giving birth. she retreats to a shaded area to calve alone although there is one or two cows that come check on her. This play back also helps to find where they may have hidden their calf for tagging and other tasks. The calves are great at hiding and this really help sluth out where she has her calf stashed!

Finally, you can see how we shifted the cows to their new paddock in the larger pasture. in the past we would string up polywire to move them across different pastures to get them to where we wanted them. that could take 15-45 minutes depending on the distance and how we needed to move them. then we would have to take that all down again. Since we’ve deployed the Halter collars we have weaned the cows off using poly for these moves and now make connecting VF “alley ways” to move them. We just get on the UTV drop the current paddock VF and then start calling to gather the cows/calves once the transition starts we just lead the way and the cows follow bringing their calves. The VF boundary keeps them together. As you can see they have taken to that really well. A task that would have taken us 30 to 90 minutes to complete take about 10 - 15 minutes once the fence drops. This has been working like a charm.

Wildfire needs fuel, and on rangeland that fuel is the dry grass left standing at the end of the season. The more of it on the ground, the faster and hotter a fire can burn. Nick Etcheverry uses his cattle as a tool to bring that down. With virtual fencing, he can hold the herd where the grass is heaviest and graze it down, so there's far less left to burn. When a fire reaches ground the cattle have grazed, it runs out of fuel and slows, which gives crews a real shot at containing it before it turns catastrophic. by @halterhq

What happens when a group of US ranchers and Australian producers go on a trip to visit beef and dairy farms throughout New Zealand?

They don’t stop talking shop (especially pasture!). They bungy jump. See all of the touristy sights.

Before the first dinner was over, producers from New South Wales, Australia, were asking ranchers from the Flint Hills of Kansas, United States, how they get cattle through a winter. They'd never met. By the next morning, everyone was comparing notes on how they all do the same job on opposite sides of the globe: taking care of their land and animals, and feeding the world.

Head over to the link in our bio to hear the deep conversations had about what it means to run a cattle operation, how producers are using Halter, and the kind of unscripted fun that happens when people from completely different parts of the world spend nine days together.

There’s a lot we can learn from each other when we head Over the Fence.

Thanks for making the trip:
Daniel and Christine Mushrush, Kansas, United States
Mark and Dina Moore and their daughter Lauren, Lone Star Ranch, California, United States
Kevin and Jude Brennan, Tarella Grazing, Queensland, Australia
Rob Bulle, Androssan Angus, New South Wales, Australia
Tom and Lucy Gubbins, Te Mania Angus, Victoria, Australia

And a big thanks to all of the NZ farmers who hosted us! by @halterhq

“At the end of the day, you can’t talk sweetly to your cows and get them to be coming on exactly when you want them to.” 💓💓💓💓

So true, that’s where we come in…

Andrew Lord farms in Te Pahu, New Zealand and this mating season, he’s keen on using the optimal timing guidance on Halter to judge which of the girls he puts up each day.

Whether you’re doing once-a-day or twice-a-day mating, you can easily check the on-heat list and each cow’s profile to see where they are in their heat cycle; whether they’re in the 24 hour window or the optimal 12 hour window.

Want to know how that window is identified through Halter? Dwayne explains what’s happening behind the scenes so you can be as pessimistically confident as Andrew and have the best possible chance of conception. by @halterhq

Calling all Halter New Zealand dairy farmers!! We're looking for farmers to feature in a TV commercial! 🎥

Tag a mate in the comments who's a laugh. Or put your hand up if you reckon Hollywood's your calling. Just kidding. You don't need any acting experience, but you do have to be comfortable and confident being in front of camera.

The shoot is scheduled for November 8th to 11th in Morrinsville - you have to be available for all of these dates. We'll cover travel and accommodation if you're not local.

Dry times are part of farming. More ways through them makes all the difference.

For Emily and Tom Coggan in Meandarra, Queensland, Australia, that means more choices when the feed starts to thin out. With Halter they can shift the mob onto standing feed, bring them closer to home, or open up country that would otherwise sit idle.

Full video on how the Coggans are getting ready for their summer in the comments.
