On a mission to unlock more productive and sustainable farming for dairy and beef 🐮 through pasture management and virtual fencing 🇳🇿 🇦🇺 🇺🇸

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Come along for a trip to the Swanton Pacific Ranch! Stay until the end to see how my students keep me young.

My research team took a trip up to Cal Poly’s @swantonpacificranch with the @polyrangeandwildlands2 club. It was an amazing Learning by Doing opportunity to get out on the land and measure residual dry matter and forage species diversity. We had a team of over 30 students collecting forage mass, flying drones, and collaborating to plan grazing as we move into the rainy season.

The data we collected will be instrumental in our grazing planning as we prepare to deploy virtual fence technology from @halterhq next month.

Residual dry matter is a standardized assessment that evaluates the level of grazing use on annual grasslands. This is the old plant material left over before the beginning of the new forage growing season.

It is so much fun to share rangelands with young people. The power of place, and the opportunity to be out on the land is always a special experience. It really never gets old, and I’m so grateful to have grown up in the ranching community. I continue to be inspired to pass these experiences on to the next generation.

California’s rangelands are so resilient. Get out and explore!

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Albany, TX on October 20 for our Texas Sustainable Ranchers Tour! We had a fantastic day at Law Ranch and Lazy 3 Ranch learning from experts about how water and grazing management, virtual fencing, and pasture health can make a difference for the land, the cattle and the business.

Thank you to all of our sponsors, hosts, speakers, and guests who came out to spend the day with us!

And a special thank you to our event sponsor, @ranchbot , and the event support from @texasgrazinglandcoalition

We’ve been trialling @halterhq on our steers grazing crop, allowing us to manage grazing in controlled areas, reduce the feed wastage and make better use of the crop while maintaining soil health

The final bunch is getting collared!
Kenny and our crew are preg-checking and fitting our last group of cows with Halter virtual fence collars and when these girls are done, EVERY cow on our ranch will be collared!
From traditional ranching to cutting-edge technology, we’re bringing the future of cattle management to Montana while keeping our roots firmly planted in the ranching way of life.
No more stragglers in the rollout. The whole herd is about to be connected!
Welcome to the next chapter at Holland Ranch. Same cattle. Same land. New technology.
Tell us: Would you trust virtual fencing on your ranch? #Montana #ranchlife #cowboy #cowboy #technology

Questions and answers. The long tables set for dinner on the first evening. The paddock walks on day two. Conversations between farmers. The speakers who gave generously of what they know. The food, the fire, the landscape holding all of it.

This is what it looks like when a community gathers with purpose.
