Members of the Canadian Association of Girls in Science recently joined HCA at the West End Prairie in Dundas Valley Conservation Area for a hands-on native seed harvesting and processing workshop.

Collecting native seeds from the meadow is an important part of ongoing restoration efforts, helping preserve locally adapted plant species and support the future health and biodiversity of the prairie.

The West End Prairie is scheduled for a prescribed burn next year, making this seed collection an important step in preparing for the next stage of restoration.

Thank you to the CAGIS group for lending a hand and learning alongside us! Tall grass with thin, wheat-like stalks fills the foreground, while dark green foliage is visible in the background. The scene has a natural, rustic atmosphere. by @hamiltonconservation

For 50 years, the Hamilton Conservation Foundation and our community of supporters have helped protect the natural spaces that make our region so special. The forests, trails and waterways we treasure today are part of a legacy created by people who cared about the future and chose to take action.

Now, it’s our turn. Rooted celebrates that legacy while looking ahead to what we can protect together. Our goal is to raise $500,000 toward a pivotal land acquisition, helping safeguard more natural lands for wildlife, our communities and generations to come.

A community tree planting at Eramosa Karst Conservation Area added 400 new trees to the landscape, helping strengthen local habitat, support biodiversity and contribute to the long-term health of this important natural area.

The planting was made possible with support from the Heritage Green Community Trust and the helping hands of 70 volunteers and staff, alongside the Friends of the Eramosa Karst, Trees for Hamilton, Team Orange from ArcelorMittal Dofasco and the Hamilton Conservation Foundation.

Thank you to everyone who helped put these trees in the ground and conservation into action! Two individuals are kneeling beside a young tree on a grassy field. They are surrounded by gardening tools and small plant pots, indicating they are involved in a planting activity. A quick update from the field! 🌲

Invasive Species Technician Ben, pictured here, has been tagging Eastern Hemlocks in the Dundas Valley selected for treatment against Hemlock Woolly Adelgid.

So far, 462 trees have been tagged and treated, helping our team monitor their health over time.

Curious about what threatens our Eastern Hemlocks? https://conservationhamilton.ca/blog/a-closer-look-at-hemlock-woolly-adelgid/ A person wearing a hat and outdoor clothing is standing on a steep, wooded hillside, grasping a tree trunk for support. Today, we honour the children who never returned home, Survivors of residential schools, their families and Indigenous communities. It is a day to reflect on the lasting impacts of the residential school system, listen to Indigenous voices and continue learning about the history and ongoing journey of truth and reconciliation.

The Basadinaa Experience offers one opportunity to continue that learning through First Nations teachings, treaty history and cultural knowledge.
