Himawari House is out today! What a feeling. These characters lived with me for the past four years, helping me feel around the spiky edges of my relationship with my mother’s culture, crystallizing the beautiful memories I shared with so many people around the world, teaching me to laugh instead of cringe at the missteps I took in learning how to be a person in the world. I’m so grateful to @dezinpub for championing this book, to all the passionate and professional people at @01firstsecond who worked so hard to make this book into a reality, to @jnel.han @yahhou323 @yudoridori @s5471286910 for putting up with all my questions and checking and rechecking my very complicated script, to my agent @dongwon_ for being my agent and legalese translator, and to @graciebeckerphoto , my first ever reader, my heart. I’m excited for the world to get to know Nao, Hyejung, Tina, Masaki, and Shinichi. よろしくお願いします!잘 부탁드립니다!

P.S. I’m putting together a playlist to listen to while reading the book, so keep an eye out in my stories! by @hamini

Not long after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, approximately 120,000 U.S. citizens of Japanese descent were forced from their homes and relocated to makeshift internment camps inland. Executive Order 9066, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, classified them as “enemy aliens” and a national security threat.
In THEY CALLED US ENEMY, actor, author, and activist @georgehtakei shares the true story of his family’s internment, giving readers a sobering glimpse of what it was like to be Japanese American before, during, and after WWII.

Takei was only four when his family was given ten minutes to gather their belongings, trading their home for a horse stall at a rundown racetrack, followed by a series of poorly ventilated, block-style houses surrounded by guards and barbed wire. The story is told from Takei’s perspective as both a child and, in hindsight, an adult. I appreciated the dual perspective and the depth it offered through a more mature lens.

I thought I had a general sense of what happened after Executive Order 9066, but the personal details of Takei’s story really got to me. I learned so much more about the Japanese American experience and gained a deeper understanding of—and compassion for—those caught in it. I appreciated seeing the reality of these camps laid out plainly, along with the stories of those imprisoned and the courageous activists outside the camps who advocated for justice.

THEY CALLED US ENEMY broke my heart. It stands as a witness to our nation’s failure to uphold its own principles, and its relevance to current events is impossible to ignore. At the same time, Takei’s account kindles hope for what the United States could be if we remember our history and redress it.

As Barack Obama said, “Justice grows out of recognition of ourselves in each other…that my liberty depends on you being free, too.” THEY CALLED US ENEMY offers an essential perspective and is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand our nation’s past and have a clear-eyed view of current events.
