YA FICTION-Contemporary, Graphic Novel

A young adult graphic novel about three foreign exchange students and the pleasures, and difficulties, of adjusting to living in Japan.

Living in a new country is no walk in the park―Nao, Hyejung, and Tina can all attest to that. The three of them became fast friends through living together in the Himawari House in Tokyo and attending the same Japanese cram school. Nao came to Japan to reconnect with her Japanese heritage, while Hyejung and Tina came to find freedom and their own paths. Though each of them has her own motivations and challanges, they all deal with language barriers, being a fish out of water, self discovery, love, and family.

My Favorite Things About Himawari House:

1.The artwork and illustrations. These were absolutely gorgeous, and definitely superior to some graphic novels I have read before.
2.Japanese Culture. I have been devouring books that have differerent aspects of different cultures that I can learn about. Now I need some mochi desperately.
3.The struggle and effort to learn a new language. I loved how it showed the difficulty of learning a new language and a new culture for those immigrating, and how hard it is to try to adapt and blend in when you are feeling so different.
4.Female Friendships! Some great dynamics between these ladies. Friends are hard as a female. Feelings of not being good enough, comparison, and just downright feeling not as attractive as another... these all play a factor in causing female friendships to crash and burn. I loved how strong the friendships were.
5.Family. Finding family and feeling a sense of belonging is so important and I love stories that show that.

Have you ever considered moving to another country?

Himawari House is a graphic novel for young adults that focuses on foreign exchange students in Japan. The students are learning Japanese in order to work, go to university, and connect with their roots.

I have never felt some many feelings while reading a graphic novel. Anxiety when the students are taking their exams, joy, happiness. I even wept in the two-page life story of their Obaachan neighbor.

I also appreciated that the author wrote the student’s English with an accent. Students of a new language aren’t going to speak it perfectly, and writing the students with an accent made the characters feel real.

🖤 Thoughts 🖤
I absolutely loved this YA graphic novel. Nao, Hyejung and Tina are three students that come together in the Himawari House, a cram school in Tokyo. They come from different places and are trying to overcome different challenges. Despite the language barriers between them, the three become fast friends.

I love these characters and the friendship that they built! The author did such a wonderful job depicting the difficulties of being young foreign exchange students through complex but relatable characters. I was so invested in the storyline and each character's struggles and successes. I unexpectedly found myself getting a little emotional throughout the book. I also appreciated that there was English and Japanese dialogue.

This was such a heartfelt graphic novel with amazing illustrations! It's a coming of age story with emphasis on friendship and self-identity. I would highly recommend this enjoyable read!

Thank you so much to the author @hamini @01firstsecond & @turnthepagetours for my gifted copy and having me on this wonderful tour!

This is the story of three foreign exchange students living in Japan. It explores the joys and difficulties of living on your own in a foreign country, the reasons the brought them there and an exploration of where they want to go in life.

This was such a sweet and emotional story. It was about friendships, family, and coming of age exploration! I loved how rich the characters were and how relatable! The author perfectly balances the excitement and sorrows of living away from home at that age and I absolutely loved it!
