I never thought this day would come but I managed to get @georgina.bidois into a pair of ski boots!

Within 2 runs Geo had already figured out how to turn, and by the end of the day we were riding the chairlift!

Look out #cortina2026, we could have next year's winter Olympian on our hands! 🏅

Once again thanks a lot to the friendly crew @berthod_sport
for the rental gear!

Always #1 (even before ‘Don’t Die - which is #2)

Be Grateful.

🛵 Long-term travel isn’t always sunshine and Instagram moments. It’s exhausting, unpredictable, and takes a lot to make happen. Most people don’t just wake up and do this—it takes saving, sacrifices, and a whole lot of patience, which if you know me - I have very little of.

When we arrived in Bali, it was raining hard.

☀️Everything we’d read and seen painted it as a sun-soaked paradise, but instead, we were greeted with flooded streets and grey skies. I mean, we aren’t silly - we know this region experiences hearty rainfall.

But we were just recently married, this part of our trip was our ‘actual ‘honeymoon.’ It would’ve been easy to be disappointed, but instead, we reminded ourselves:

We’re here. We made it.

In Bali.

Living a life we worked so hard for.

☔️ So we threw on raincoats, got out there, and explored anyway—because a bit of a gratitude check turns even the stormiest days into something beautiful. 🌧️✨

🎒It was always our plan!

We’ve hitchhiked, couchsurfed, house-sat, Workaway-ed, and camped our way across countries.

We’ve had numerous supermarket dinners, park-cooked meals, and drinks with locals that have fueled us. 🍻

⛺️ We’ve slept in our tent, on beaches, at bus stations, on overnight trains or buses — saving pennies, and collecting stories.

💇‍♂️Haircuts? DIY.
⛑️Broken gear? Repaired on the road.
🛝Fun? Often free — mountains, beaches, and Rick Steve’s ‘Audible Europe’ have kept us highly entertained.

Recommendations: free city walks - not actually free, but always worth it.

Long-term travel isn’t about luxury for us; it’s about creativity, resilience, looking out for one another, connecting with nature, meeting epic people (they know who they are) and making moves for our plot 🖊️🌏

(Although Hamish and I did come away with a very healthy savings account, AND we earned £10,000 during the month of December 2024 selling Xmas trees - so let’s not get it too twisted) taken in Istanbul, Turkey by @hamishwcarter

Bali is known for its beaches, clubs, and wellness retreats, but if you ask me, the real magic is in the food.

While others were booking sound baths and sunrise yoga, I was tracking down the best bites on the island. Sure, I made a half-hearted attempt at wellness tourism with a bottle of You C1000 Vitamin Orange—which had more sugar than anything—but hydration, right?

My true Bali obsession though…

Vegan nasi campur (again, health!) A perfectly balanced plate of rice, tempeh, veggies, and sambal that I could eat every day. And don’t even get me started on dadar gulung—those bright green, pandan-infused coconut pancakes are a revelation. Add in crispy corn fritters from Molecha Organic Restaurant on the Sweet Orange Walk Trail, and suddenly, Ubud was our food pilgrimage, decorated by yoga pants.

Another gem? Sun Sun Warung, where I had some of the best home-cooked Balinese meals. As you can see photos 3-5 are dank - don’t ask me what we ordered, I was a few Arak deep. Sun Sun specialises in simple, fresh, and packed with flavour dishes - the best.

Picture 5, a vegan buffet (honestly I ate so much meat and fish here but the vegetarian food really stood out) Yeye’s Warung in Pecatu. Huge portions, paid by weight, and you go to the cabinet and pick out what you want. No photo of the food, too hungry.

And finally, my magnum opus - babi gulung - I mean, feel the name roll of your tongue, then imagine the actual taste. Warung Babi Gulung Sari Dewi in Nusa Dua was a perfect blend of fatty pork meat, crispy skin, punchy sour and sweet sauce - with a classic Balinese spice, that front of mouth feel. Portions were generous, sides came with, the dining area was unpolished and communal (in other words perfection) BOSH.

Not pictured; huge shout out to Circle K, Indomaret, M Mart, Alpha mart for being absolute g’s. Heaps of beers purchased 🍻 taken in Bali, Indonesia by @hamishwcarter

Coach @georgina.bidois finally donned her whistle and taught me how to snowboard today!

While we've been living in Italy I've been skiing but wanted to give snowboarding a go while we've got the time to practice.

This was an incredibly humbling experience and I'm sure I'll be paying for it with my muscles tomorrow!

Geo thank you for bringing me over to the dark side, I think I'm hooked and I now have an appreciation for how tiring it is getting around the mountain on a snowboard!

Thank you @lathuile.valledaosta for the awesome conditions today and to @berthod_sport for the rental snowboard and boots!

🏂🏔️🏁🫣🤷

🎒For my light packing nerds*:

Hamish and I on any hike, trip or long term travel play ‘scrutinise’ where we lay out everything we want to take, and then get to scrutinise each other’s choices.

It’s really just making sure we are willing to carry something particular across the world for a one use moment. But sometimes you have to defend the absolute must haves, like my watercolour kit, and the binoculars 😂

It’s also a good reminder that you probably won’t shit yourself everyday, and to cull the undies situation. Although there were some very close calls…. 💩 taken in Hamilton, New Zealand by @hamishwcarter

🎥 This was so hard to make, so no feedback please.

Honestly, I wasn’t too fussed about missing the Rhône-Alps—thought it’d be just another pretty mountain range.

But since we are living 45 minutes on the other side of Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc in French), in the Italian Alps - we thought it’d be a missed opportunity not to spend some time there.

🏂Chamonix. 🚂Chamonix. ⛸️Chamonix.

Completely blew my mind. Towering peaks, glacier-blue rivers, and the crisp alpine air… safe to say, I get the hype now.

Don’t come at me for my dodging filming, and my non Wes Anderson filter, everything is in a state of evolution right. taken in Chamonix, France by @hamishwcarter

Huge thanks to @sanctuary_mountain Maungatautari for their time and for donating some surplus pest-proof fencing materials for our exhibition.

‘A Mimic of Time’ employs recognisable materials and objects used for conservation to establish a broader discussion about these objects' relationship with their immediate environment and human-non-human relations.

Surrounded by one of the world’s longest pest-proof fences Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari is New Zealand's largest fenced eco-sanctuary and a charitable organisation doing amazing conservation work in the heart of the Waikato.

Here are some photos with James from Maungatautari's operations team in the workshop preparing some fencing sections for the exhibition. Take a peek at the fence coming together during install yesterday with @llenyd @meanwhile_gallery

To view this freestanding section of pest proof fence and other objects donated for the exhibition, come and visit the show at Meanwhile Gallery in Pōneke, Wellington, opening from 5.30pm tomorrow Wednesday 23 October.

Upcoming exhibition alert! I am excited to announce a new exhibition in collaboration with fellow artist @llenyd
Price

Opening @meanwhile_gallery this Wednesday 23 October at 5.30pm in Te Whanganui a Tara Wellington, this exhibition addresses themes surrounding conservation and environmentalism in Aotearoa.

‘A Mimic of Time’ employs recognisable materials and objects used for conservation to establish a broader discussion about these objects' relationship with their immediate environment and human-non-human relations.

Using the pest proof fence as a leaping off point, the exhibition explores these intersections through sculpture, painting, drawing, photography and video.

A huge thanks to Helen, Tali and James from @sanctuary_mountain, Maungatautari Ecological Island Trust in the Waikato for donating materials and giving up their time to help with the development of the exhibition. Nga mihi nui!

Also special thanks to @tossi_nz (Tawharanui Open Sanctuary Society) for hosting Llenyd at their depot and for allowing us to capture video onsite at the sanctuary.

Follow along for more info about the exhibition including details about the opening event!

It's been over a month since @georgina.bidois and I embarked on our big trip to travel together the world!

We've packed up our little life in Auckland and now it's backpacking time! 🎒🥾✈️⛺🌍

For our first stop in Perth we caught up with family, and were lucky enough to spend some time south of Perth in Margaret river walking a few days on the Cape to Cape walk. This multi-day coastal trail on the Indian ocean connects Cape Naturaliste at the northern point of the peninsula to Cape Leeuwin at the South Western most point of WA.

The wildlife in this area was amazing, waking up to the Kookaburra every morning, we also saw snakes, lots of lizards, giant centipedes, kangaroos, and Dolphins out at Sea.

Truly blown away by this place and can't wait to go back to see and learn more.

For now we are off on the next leg of our journey! by @hamishwcarter
