Three months on Barra have felt like slipping into the heartbeat of an island that runs on resilience, joy, and a deep love of its own people. We’ve danced, sung, and chatted late into the night with the old boys, laughed ourselves silly with the gals, weathered storms and basked in May sunshine, swum in icy waters, fished (badly), and soaked up every bit of the island’s magic. From festivals to late pub nights, from hosting in the hostel to Hamish managing the hotel restaurant, to hearing about all the ✨drama✨, from his epic strimming sessions to stewarding at BarraLive — Every role has been a privilege💋 This is a community that shows up for each other, celebrates together, that weathers the storm and remains resilient, and we’ve been lucky enough to contribute our own small part. We leave with full hearts, grateful for every moment with everyone. ——————————————————— And so I leave you with, my true love affair… ❤️Henry❤️

Bubanj Memorial Park (Spomen-park Bubanj), just outside Niš, is one of the most powerful and under-visited places I’ve been to. During WWII, this site was where over 10,000 people — mostly Serbs, Roma, and Jews — were executed by the Nazis. Many of them were prisoners from the nearby Red Cross Concentration Camp (Crveni Krst), brought here in groups and shot in mass graves. What stands there now is unforgettable: three giant concrete fists punching out of the earth, each one a different size — representing a man, a woman, and a child. A whole family, resisting. ✊🏽✊🏼✊🏿 It’s brutal and poetic, this idea that even in the face of death, people resisted with dignity. The fists aren’t clenched in hate — they’re a symbol of collective strength, of never surrendering your humanity. The memorial was built in the 1960s, during Yugoslavia’s push to commemorate partisan resistance across the region, and like a lot of the spomeniks, it feels alien and stark but deeply emotional. No glossy museum. No curated signage. Just the wind, the forest, and this towering grief. It’s not touristy, and that makes it hit even harder. It’s a place to sit, to remember, and to feel the echoes of our terrible past.

Niiiiš 🇷🇸 ➡️ Belgrade 🚂 Didn’t know much about southern Serbia before we rocked up to Niš, but woah — this place is layered. From the Čele Kula (Skull Tower 😳) made of rebel heads, to the somber Red Cross Concentration Camp, and the massive Bubanj Memorial (Field of Fists ✊🏽), you really feel the weight of history here. We learnt about Niš’s once-thriving Jewish community — now mostly memory, marked by small plaques and quiet spaces. Then came the train ride to Belgrade — slow, rattly and beautiful. Rolling hills, tiny villages, and so many sunflowers 🌻🌻🌻 Belgrade hit different. This city wears its scars — bombed bridges, war memorabilia, and a kind of gritty pride. But it’s also full of amazing energy: chevapi, grilled everything, cheap beers, and football fans lighting up the stadium like it’s a revolution 🔥⚽️🔥 Ended up in a sweaty warehouse party at @clubdrugstore , dancing with strangers under a disco ball that’s probably seen some weird things. Hung out on pavements and in parks, 10/10 chaos and charm.

Hiking through Rila National Park (Trail to the 7 Rila Lakes) was pure magic 🌲 We set off from Sofia, catching three village buses to places not usually visited - with no internet and no grasp of the language. We were greeted by baba who indicated (noticing our packs) that we were heading the right way. These baba themselves were making the pilgrimage to one of the most beautiful monastery’s we’ve seen on our trip. The Rila Monastery sits nestled like a jewel — majestic and humbling, layered in colour and calm. Singing comes from the windows, and areas are closed off for the faithful. From here we began our four day trek. ⛰️✨ From the moment we stepped onto the alpine trails, we were greeted by a sweet mountain dog who became our unexpected guide for the four days. An animal truly dedicated to the mountains 🐕❤️ 🌲 We wandered through pine forests, drank from ice-cold mountain streams, and stood in awe of the wild horses grazing freely in the open meadows 🐎. We stopped at old shepherd huts, still used in summer, where fresh cheese and firewood tell quiet stories of simpler living. Donkeys arrived carrying provisions for the summer months. They lay around our tent, for a much deserved rest. The climb to the 7 Rila Lakes: each lake more breathtaking than the last, shimmering in the high-altitude silence, It’s the kind of place that makes you believe in magic. 🇧🇬 Bulgaria, you’ve truly got range.

From the buzz of Sofia’s town centre to the stillness of the Rila Mountains A shift from the clatter of trams and chit chatter of old ladies, to pine-scented silence, alpine air and donkeys carrying provisions. Just a couple of hours apart, but it feels like another world. 🥾🏕️🐾

July 2024 - Sofia, Bulgaria. 📜 Originally inhabited by ancient Thracian tribes, it later became part of the Roman Empire, leaving behind ruins that are still visible as you head into the cities underground rail lines. During the Ottoman period, mosques were built, some of which still stand today alongside Eastern Orthodox churches that emerged after Bulgaria’s liberation. 🕍⛪️🕌 During World War II, an Orthodox priest in Bulgaria took a courageous stand against the planned deportation of Bulgarian Jews to Nazi concentration camps. In a powerful act of civil disobedience, Father Kiril of Plovdiv lay down on the train tracks, physically blocking the trains designated to transport local Jews. His actions, along with the efforts of other clergy, politicians, and ordinary citizens, contributed to Bulgaria’s refusal to comply with Nazi demands for the deportation of its Jewish population. As a result, nearly 50,000 Bulgarian Jews were saved from the Holocaust—an act of defiance that remains a significant moment in both Bulgarian and Jewish history. The city also features remnants of its communist past, including large concrete buildings and socialist monuments. Wide boulevards and pedestrian walkways connect modern cafes with cultural landmarks. Statues, public art, and preserved ruins are scattered throughout the city, reflecting its complex history. 🏞️ Fresh water fountains flow from the neighbouring Rila Mountain ranges and are thought by the locals to have healing properties. Many people full their water cans up daily in the city centre and only drink this water. 🥩 Traditional Bulgarian cuisine—such as banitsa, shopska salad, and grilled meats— is widely available and remains a strong part of daily life. Possibly one of my favourite cities visited, underrated - absolutely.
