“Nyonya 小姐(XiaoJie)” 2025
925 silver, human hair, thread

Wooo this piece brought me into 2024 when my interest in how garments represent our identities started. My muse here is the Baju Kebaya collar, commonly worn in SEA but I know it because of my Malaysian side (I included a pic of it on slide5). The kebaya is a special traditional outfit because it’s worn by so many different groups of people, but honestly nobody around me had even heard the word before. I am rly proud of my Chinese-Malaysian identity so it was only fitting to give the kebaya some love and appreciation with this piece

Nyonya and XiaoJie are just both terms to call Chinese girls like me (ok don’t kill me I am simplifying the definitions bc I’m lazy) but one used is in Malaysia while other is in Taiwan👍🏼hence the title

Special thanks to @grandcrossart for shaving my life and literally out vibrations connecting on every wavelength because she decided to shave her head right as I decided to use hair as the chain in this piece. So blessed because of her beautiful healthy Vietnamese hair HAHAHA literally

could say more but this is getting long af but I INCLUDED FUN VIDEOS hehe taking advantage of YHE 20-pic update and also the beautiful photos @helenawestra took!!

She also made it to the @baltimorejewelrycenter student exhibition which I was stoked about⭐️⭐️ so she has been to Baltimore before I have 🙄🙄 by @hanafoo.design

Also hugggeeeee appreciation for the windgate-Lamar fellowship for making this piece possible at all. I pushed myself to build the biggest I’ve ever done knowing I could still ship it home with the support of @centerforcraft 🥹 taken in Anderson Ranch Arts Center by @hanafoo.design

“Beyond the Commodity: Lotus Unbroken” ,925 silver

‼️I starred the most important part for u lazy mfs who don’t wanna read‼️

When I turned 16, my grandma pointed to a giant pot in our back yard in Malaysia. She said, there’s gold she buried in there 30 years ago, and it’s mine. We dug and cut roots out for hours, and I happily claimed my first gold chain(it has not been taken off for over 2hours since so almost 6 years!)

Although she grew up poor in Thailand, the first thing my grandma bought with her savings was gold. Basically, bc of her, I LOVE me southeast/south Asian yellow gold.

⭐️⭐️This past year I got a lotus tattoo. As much as I love it, I never thought of the lotus as a viable tattoo option, thinking: “white trash have ripped it off too much with their namastay in bed shirts and lotus doodles. No thanks. “ However, that became the very reason I made this necklace and designed the tattoo with my dad.

⭐️ I decided I want to create a piece that emulates the feeling the antique jewelry I grew up with does, while also almost reclaiming the lotus. It’s an incredibly significant symbol in Buddhism and Yoga. I wanted to devote an entire piece to appreciating its beauty. I don’t have to let the people who see the lotus as a marketing symbol cloud it’s meaning in my culture. I also wanted to highlight SEA yellow gold as something precious, hence the lotus and center “stone” being gold.

I designed this project w no limitations. I came to Taichung, Taiwan to learn traditional metalsmithing from a master/shifu. My shifu became a master by the time he was 18, so he assured me, whatever it is, I can do it.

It took multiple months but: I learned how to engrave, made my own materials(from silver shot and hammering), casted and hand-refined each link of the chain, made my own graver, learned how to use the traditional torch, gold plated for the first time, jewelry terms in Chinese, and sm more

I couldn’t have done any of this without my immense support from my shifu, bosses, and the WLF grant @centerforcraft (+my boss’ daughter helping me in the 2nd video 😊) pics taken in Malaysia, work done in Taiwan taken in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia. by @hanafoo.design

“Upon Asian Squatting, I Connect with my Ancestors”

Made this 1 year ago as part of my Naked Self Portrait series during my wood-firing residency in Foshan, Guangdong, China

Asian Squatting is an unshakable symbol of my culture as someone from the Chinese Diaspora. The context on when someone would Asian squat ranges from eating, waiting, doomscrolling, relaxing, smoking, and the list goes on. This piece is an homage to Asian squatting, a gesture that is so universally recognized on a global scale that its significance is often overlooked

I imagined myself as a naked cat-person getting ready to eat at home because the longevity associated with cats. Just chillin 🤞🏼🤞🏼

CONE 10 SINGLE FIRED CLAY 🌞🌞🌞 and I made it in 24 hours because the first draft had dried out too much and nobody thought I could do it but I did n she’s beautiful 😊😊😊 taken in Foshan City, Guangdong, China by @hanafoo.design

I missed my big hoops so much u know I had to make some
925 Silver casted individual rectangles

Used the bigger leftover pieces from my necklace project’s handmade chain links/rectangle pieces

It was supposed to be a quick week project but it took
SO000000 long yall the soldering was painstaking. I basically underestimated how much solder each link needed and didn’t realize until already soldered both forms so I had to basically re-solder each seam 🥶🥶 amongst many other hiccups

Made in Taichung during my 4mo study with a traditional master goldsmith 😊 taken in Taichung, Taiwan by @hanafoo.design

Animal-Androgynous Hair clip😸😊
because sometimes you can make things for FUN‼️‼️
ive heard she looks like a bear or cat but I personally think she looks more like ME 👸🏻

925 Silver, Ruby, gold and silver plated Copper

Made this in Taichung, Taiwan as one of my two fun projects to conclude my time there ; the hair mechanism was tough but my shifu is amazing so the only hard part was teaching me 💩

And shoutout @centerforcraft who made it possible for me to devote so much time in Taiwan to learning traditional metal/jewelry-smithing 💘pics taken in china taken in 佛山順德 by @hanafoo.design

“Growing Pains of a Moral Compass” 2024

Ceramics -> reduction firing for the base and obvara (fermented pancake batter) for the hand!!! Video on slide 6

TLDR: [smashed] Plaster mold guns + the entire heart sutra/心經 carved + Vitarka Mudra on top ; screenshot of my aunt explaining what the sutra means on slide 7 , excerpt slide 9

What inspired this project was my annoyance at the multiple gun molds our studio had readily available(slide 10 me finding n looking at the gun mold out of distainHAHA). It reminded me of how violence is so normalized and prevalent in todays culture — art and media, kids toys, desensitization to school shooting — which pisses me offff. Especially when art and media use blood and violence for shock value to draw people in. Violence has become a tool for entertainment and weirdly enough, with guns particularly, a sign of “freedom” 😐

^because I hate that so much my goal became to create art with process rather than just design. I carefully molded all the guns just to smash them to incoherent blobs to both figuratively and physically express my frustration. Afterwards, I covered the pile with the entire Heart Sutra to, again lol, literally and figuratively erase the guns meaning in the pieces structure.

A few years ago in Malaysia I wrote the entire sutra on paper as a kind of meditation lol and my dad sent it to our family group chat —> my aunt explained the essence of the sutra beautifully so I included the screenshot😌

The literal cherry on top to emerge out of the pile of now demolished and figureless guns is the Vitarka Mudra, a hand symbol which represents wisdom and the transmission of Buddhist teachings , as seen on many Buddhist statues and also practiced in Yoga by @hanafoo.design
