Aux Armes de Bruxelles

Some restaurants have been part of a city’s story for so long, they feel like they belong to everyone. Aux Armes de Bruxelles is one of them.

Since 1921, this Brussels institution has been serving up Belgian classics from the same address, including its famous moules-frites, which is one of my all time favorite meals to eat.

My husband and I visited Brussels last year and can’t wait to go back, hopefully next year when we head back to Belgium for Tomorrowland.

Happy Friday, friends!

It’s the weekend, which hopefully means you’ll be enjoying some delicious bites at your favorite places or adventuring out to try somewhere new.

This week’s lineup is all about one of life’s most perfect foods - THE MIGHTY BURGER! These are some of my favorite spots and I still have so many left to try.

Campfire

I’ve been meaning to draw @CampfireRestaurant for a while now.

There’s a lot to love about this place: the live fire cooking, the genuinely great service, and a gorgeous cocktail menu.

Get the cornbread, the crown of broccoli, the cavatelli… And that incredible ribeye.

Campfire just celebrated 10 years in Carlsbad, which feels like a pretty good time to revisit a place that has become such an important part of the local dining landscape.

Smoke Queen Barbecue

I had the pleasure of enjoying a beautiful meal with a group of friends @smokequeenbbq a few weeks ago and I’ve already been planning my return.

The ribs have that perfect smoky edge, and the pork belly burnt ends are worth the trip on their own. And the dirty rice! Do not skip the dirty rice. And the cucumbers!

I also love the story behind this place. @chefwinnieyee brings her own Chinese and Malaysian influences into the barbecue, melding smoke, spice, richness, and comfort.

Smoke Queen is tucked into @thecottageindustries which gives the whole experience a neighborhood feel that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a super special secret spot.

So if you haven’t been yet - GO!

Bring people. Order too much and share all the things! Get the ribs. Get the burnt ends. Definitely get the dirty rice, and tack on a Pandana Pudding to go!

I LOVE BREAKFAST BURRITOS

Some are worth waking up early for. Others are best enjoyed after a questionable night out. All of my favorites deserve a place in the breakfast burrito hall of fame.

Now I need to know: Where’s your all-time favorite breakfast burrito? My list is FAR from complete! Drop your go-to spot in the comments. I’m always on the hunt for a new one!

Bardega

There’s something wonderfully unexpected about finding a place like @drinkbardega in Laguna Hills.

A little bodega one side, a bar and restaurant on the other, wood paneling, low light, vintage details, and the kind of decor that makes you feel like you’ve walked into a neighborhood hangout that’s been there forever.

Then there’s the TV dinner and a martini, straight up retro comfort food! The bar program is excellent and the menu is packed with fun dishes to try.

Bardega feels like a cool new chapter for South OC, and proof that an unassuming strip mall spot can have a little nostalgia, major personality, and a really good drink.

Y’all, @theannapizza in Valley Village was absolutely delightful.

I grew up in the Valley and love coming back every chance I get to try new food in my old neighborhood.

Get yourself to @theannapizza ASAP. Do not miss out on the Upside Down - A vodka sauce pizza with a sesame seed crust. (Side note, I love sesame seeds in all forms. Give me all the sesame seeds and sesame flavored things you have.)

This pie is was crispy, chewy and covered in so many perfectly toasty sesame seeds, I quite literally found a dozen or more of them down my shirt later on. 😂 We also added an order of the meatballs, which were rich and packed with gorgeous flavor.

The setting is warm and paired with genuinely great service. The shop’s gallery wall of framed photos gives the room so much personality and I haven’t stopped thinking about the penny floor at the entrance.

Well done, @theannapizza! I’ll see you again soon for another pie and some pasta!

Pizzeria Sei

I finally made it out to @Pizzeria.Sei for dinner last week, and the pizza was absolutely incredible. We were seated at the glass enclosed counter and enjoyed @Pizza_Robot_William_Joo's Caesar Salad, Funghi Crostini, Diavola pizza (tomato, fior di latte, basil, soppressata, olive, parmigiano reggiano, chili flakes, evoo) and Bismarck pizza (fior di latte, prosciutto cotto, egg, pecorino, basil, truffle oil, sea salt).

The flavors were all so fresh, and the high quality of each ingredient - from the anchovies in the Caesar salad to the bright tomatoes in the sauce and the silky prosciutto cotto with egg - made every bite exceptional.

I'm already planning to make a follow-up reservation to enjoy more things from their menu. Who wants to join?
