Cutting funding for cosmetology is an insult to the women who had to build this profession in the first place.

White women helped pioneer early systems of professional cosmetology at a time when sexism severely limited their economic opportunities. Black women then built within and beyond those systems while facing both racism and sexism, creating schools, businesses, products, jobs, and entire economic networks when traditional America offered them very few places to go.

They did not just do hair and nails. They built a system where one did not exist for them, and that system became a legitimate pathway to education, entrepreneurship, and financial independence for generations of women.

That history deserves investment, not reduction.

My latest article explores cosmetology’s roots in racism, oppression, and sexism, how those roots still shape the economics of the industry today, and why the current funding conversation is much bigger than beauty.

Today, the only thing that carried me was my why.

I pray that whoever comes across this is refilled with hope—not the sadness that comes from being dismissed, the feelings of inadequacy that follow, or the silence of a support system that once was.

May the hasty disregard you’ve experienced instill in you a ruthless resilience that can only be felt, not heard. While your journey there is over, another journey lies ahead. Continue to pick up the pieces, breathe, and give yourself grace. taken in Georgia by @haniyahharris

Cosmetology has historically created economic opportunities for women, especially Black women. As Georgia heads to the polls, we should be asking which candidates have a record of supporting the entrepreneurs who keep our communities going.

Early voting ends October 30th. Election Day is November 3rd. Know who and what you’re voting for! taken in Georgia by @haniyahharris

The economic value of cosmetology extends far beyond the individual earnings of those working behind the chair or nail table. You cannot measure the economic value of an entire industry while ignoring the businesses and opportunities its professionals have helped create.

These brands represent the innovation and entrepreneurship that have grown directly from cosmetology. Beauty professionals have taken their skills, education, and industry experience and transformed them into businesses that extend into product development, manufacturing, distribution, retail, and education. taken in Atlanta, Georgia by @haniyahharris

The facts have been scattered, so I put them all in one place. No prior arrests. No criminal history. The system does not discriminate.

One of the most disturbing realities of this case is that a similar incident was documented on September 4, 2026, just weeks before David’s death. This raises serious questions about what jail officials knew, what they failed to address, and why these incidents continue to happen. Cell doors without functioning locks, repeated security failures, and lives lost inside a facility responsible for protecting those in its custody.

May this story serve as a wake-up call to the systemic failures and wrongdoing that continue to cost people their lives. May accountability follow, and may justice be served for my brother’s friend, David Kojo-Addo Wright. taken in Georgia by @haniyahharris

Planning to attend cosmetology school in 2027? Federal financial aid changes could impact access to student loans for future hairstylists, nail technicians, estheticians, and barbers. Here’s what you need to know about the proposed earnings requirements and why cosmetology’s history matters.

Do not confuse the two: who a person is or the circumstances that led to their arrest is not the same as the DeKalb County Jail failing to exercise reasonable care over the people in its custody.
I truly hope my brother’s friend gets justice. This could have been anyone.

The system is full of people getting paid, yet somehow the work they’re paid to do goes undone. Hold the DeKalb County Jail accountable with the same force they use to hold everyone else accountable. taken in Georgia by @haniyahharris
