The government requires the license, but who pays for the education? 💅🏽

Cosmetology has historically created economic opportunities for women, especially Black women. As Georgia heads to the polls, we should be asking which candidates have a record of supporting the entrepreneurs who keep our communities going.

Early voting ends October 30th. Election Day is November 3rd. Know who and what you’re voting for!

The economic value of cosmetology extends far beyond the individual earnings of those working behind the chair or nail table. You cannot measure the economic value of an entire industry while ignoring the businesses and opportunities its professionals have helped create.

These brands represent the innovation and entrepreneurship that have grown directly from cosmetology. Beauty professionals have taken their skills, education, and industry experience and transformed them into businesses that extend into product development, manufacturing, distribution, retail, and education.

Cosmetology was built differently because women had to survive differently. Now, the same systems they had to build outside of are determining access to the education they created.

Cutting funding for cosmetology is an insult to the women who had to build this profession in the first place.

White women helped pioneer early systems of professional cosmetology at a time when sexism severely limited their economic opportunities. Black women then built within and beyond those systems while facing both racism and sexism, creating schools, businesses, products, jobs, and entire economic networks when traditional America offered them very few places to go.

They did not just do hair and nails. They built a system where one did not exist for them, and that system became a legitimate pathway to education, entrepreneurship, and financial independence for generations of women.

That history deserves investment, not reduction.

My latest article explores cosmetology’s roots in racism, oppression, and sexism, how those roots still shape the economics of the industry today, and why the current funding conversation is much bigger than beauty.
