Austin’s (my 7 year old with muscular dystrophy) bedtime routine is fairly typical:
Bath, story time, toothbrushing, kisses

Some additional activities:
💚cough assist machine - like PT for the lungs
💚suction - sucking out any secretions loosened by cough assist
💚ventilator - he sleep with “elephant” (what we call his gray mask and tube) to help ensure he’s getting enough oxygen while he sleeps. If he doesn’t wear it all night he complains of a headache the next day

Also, the elephant in the room being: he’s never going to do any of this independently. We will carry him, bathe him (in a special chair), change his clothes, brush his teeth, etc etc forever.

In many ways it all just feels like the normal routine now. He still gets to play and be silky with his brother, listen to stories together, share a room.

The biggest grief for me has been the fact that I can’t easily snuggle him in my lap while reading books. This was more a thought when he was little - about the time of life when I would have had my older son in the rocking chair for story time.

Now they’re both in their own beds and I’m in the rocking chair alone. But it’s still a cozy scene with our salt lamp and vocab word review 😜

What questions do you have about our routine?! 👇

Just a snippet of what we do every morning with our 7 year old Austin who has muscular dystrophy- from breathing treatments, to suction, to G tube feeding.

But we love a lazy Sunday around here when he can stay cozy in bed and I can sit in the rocking chair and read with him.

But whether we’re moving fast or slow, these are the rhythms of our lives. And if we sleep through the 6:30 alarm, oh gosh, we are flustered to have to get everything going as quickly as possible (particularly his meals which last 2 hours each and require a good 3-4 hour break between).

It’s like that newborn phase. But forever.

✌️ Hey I’m Hannah, SAHM (stuck at home mom) to 2 little boys one of whom had a rare form of muscular dystrophy called L-CMD.

We spend our days doing therapies, home school and mealtimes. We try to make our home the place we love to be, because that is where we usually are!

✌️Follow along for real life stories of this unordinary, ordinary life. And if this kind of life resonates with you too, I’m especially glad you’re here 🩷

It’s gorgeous out, I’m ready to decorate for Halloween, I’m on my second cup of coffee and I’m working on getting into ketosis tomorrow …. I expect to get a LOT of housework done. ✅

🎃 Does the run up to the holidays make you excited or burn you out?

🎃 Comment CANDY for a list of my favorite non-candy trick or treat options (no raisins or toothbrushes I promise)!

{Because you never know who or why someone can’t have candy - like our son Austin who eats via feeding tube}

My 7 year old looked up at me from his play mat where he spends most of the day and asked if he could run and play with his cousins. When I said that I would have to carry him, he shouted “I KNOW everyone can walk besides me!”

My heart skipped a beat…oh.

“Okay yes you’re right, Austin. Do you want me to pick you up and go with them?”

“YESSSS!” (Said in that tone kids everywhere use to say: YES OBVIOUSLY MOM 🙄)

So off we went. I had a few up and down the stairs in me until I made the rest of the kids just stay downstairs to play together.

Austin’s usually so upbeat and doesn’t let on that he notices the differences between himself and others.

But when these little blips pop through, they can be painful. Like a little hernia that’s popped its head out.

He mostly moves on very quickly because at this point I think a lot of the frustration is because he can’t do something he wants to in the moment. I don’t think he’s yet started ruminating on the future.

We talk opening about his muscular dystrophy in an age appropriate way, so I don’t feel that we are hiding anything from him.

And we mostly focus on all the things he can do or making things work for him - for instance he recently went through a revolving door for the first time and he loved it 😍

This video is showing one of his favorite activities - “basketball” - but he’s the ball. 🏀

Today we talked about what it means to be resourceful and ways in which each of us was resourceful. He REALLY resonated with the idea that he is resourceful and adaptable and I really loved that for him and the way his face lit up when he saw it in himself. 😍

🫶 Moms, what tough conversations have you had with your kids recently? Share your wins and ways and means in the comments. I always love learning how to approach sticky situations!

Because it’s always good to be inclusive and you never know who can’t eat candy:
🍬 feeding tube
🍭 allergies
🍬 oral aversion
🍭 diabetes or other condition

I’ve tried to make it really easy to include some non candy options to give out for trick or treating this year!

Comment CANDY for the links or check them out in Stories and the “Halloween” highlight on my profile.

🎃 What are you going to pick this year?!

To be clear, I still offer candy too. I just keep everything separate.

Happy Halloween!! 🎃

Yes I can meet for coffee - how about between 3-3:30am a week from Tuesday?

Running the calendar like a well oiled machine. No room for overlap, no room for changes.

My mornings start like a cannon - getting kids ready for school, doing Austin’s breathing treatments, changing his diaper and starting his tube fed breakfast. Then we launch into his various therapies, teachers and tutors. I get laundry, painting or this social media stuff done in the in-between times that range from 20-90 minute chunks.

Then after school activities, homework, dinner, bedtime. And then MORE tube feeding for Austin.

My husband and I take turns staying up for Austin’s overnight feed so that in theory the other one can get better sleep. It works for us.

I actually love this phase of life. It’s exhausting but I do thrive on a routine.

What has gotten you through trauma?
I don’t think you’re ever really through it but some things that helped me keep functioning in some really dark times. ⬆️

When we got Austin’s diagnosis it was one month before COVID.

On the one hand that was really extra scary. On the other hand, we had nowhere to be and so we had nothing but time. Time to be at home. Figure out this new life. Grieve.

One thing I didn’t include here but absolutely should have: friends, family and community. Without nearly everyone’s support, it would have been a million times harder and more devastating.

There are angels everywhere - some come and go in phases of your life and some stick around for the long haul. I’ve had so many and I’m so grateful for each and every one of them. The people who show up extra hard. The strangers who go out of their way to support and offer help.

Just want to say thank you. If you’re wondering if I mean you - I probably do. 🩷🩷🩷

Comment LINK and I’ll DM you some options to DIY (follow first so I’ll have the ability to message you).

If you are still measuring meds into a medicine cup and then sucking up with a syringe, then you know how messy, frustrating and wasteful this can be!

Did you know they make special bottle tops that allow you to directly pull meds from the bottle without wasting or spending time flicking out bubbles?

And they make the for traditional and Enfit syringes!

👉Sharing my motherhood journey so you don’t feel so alone in yours. So glad you’re here and hope you’ll follow along 🎉

Any other millennial moms totally crash out in the second half of your cycle?!

I’ve been so resistant to put this perimenopause label on myself but bits of evidence keep stacking up 😭

“When will I be old enough to walk?”
My 7 year old son Austin has a rare form of muscular dystrophy and has never walked, stood or even sat up on his own.

When he asked me this my felt my voice catch.

Even though he’s incredibly physically disabled, he is cognitively typical and now starting to notice how he is different from his brother and cousins.

For the most part, he is happy and that’s the biggest blessing. But when he says things like this, I can see he wants more.

I replied with something like “oh hey bud, I know you really want to get up and go play with your brother, but for now your muscles don’t work like that. But you can still play together and have so much fun, and I can pick you up and we can dance, ok?”

That seemed to satisfy him for now. I do worry about his future thoughts and feelings but I just take every day at a time and answer the questions as they come.

👇 If you’ve had some tough convos like this and have some recs on things to say, I’d love to hear them 💗
