And just like that, we made music. I’d like to take the time and reflect on the concerts we performed last weekend at the Rio Grande Valley.

Canciones de mi Tierra holds dear and near to my heart. It was a project that involved my wonderful colleague and friend, @ericofbezerra.piano last year. We wanted to explore Latin-American art songs together and expose them in our community in Rochester, NY. However, I knew deep in my heart that I needed to bring this repertoire back “home,” where it could be met with its people. I was honored to perform with Dr. Chelsea Whitaker, who graciously poured her time and talent, and most importantly met the people of the RGV and came to understand its culture (she absolutely loved it here!). This was truly one of the most wholesome performances I’ve had. Some of the repertoire we chose were recently published by @mundoarts_music , and others were by culturally impactful composers such as Maria Grever. Bringing this project, something that started in the Northern-Canadian border town of Rochester, NY to the Southern-Mexican border town of McAllen, TX, has been sincerely special for me.

The thing is y’all, I think it is quite necessary to take music that is considered “worldly,” “rare,” or “exotic,” and perform it as our regular classical repertoire. To be curious.

Conducting this gem tomorrow ✨

It’s been a dream come true to be involved with this gorgeous piece, Noches en los jardines de España by Spanish composer Manuel de Falla. 🌳 The 17 year old girl in me is screaming with excitement!

I’m beyond grateful for all these musicians in Rochester to come together and play such wonderful repertoire. We have musicians from @eastmancommunityschool, @eastman.school, @rittigers, @urochester, @rocphilsyo, and community players; This is what community looks like! Congrats to the ECMS Community Orchestra Project! 🤎

There were MANY sparkling moments from last week’s concert and it was just too hard for me to choose which one to post. Congrats to the orchestra and soloists. You all came together in full force! ✨

I hope this project can continue for years to come, creating a space for us to collaborate with students and alumni from our Eastman community. A few of our @eastmancommunityschool adult and high school students joined us, and UofR campus students as well. I’m grateful for the love we all found making this music come alive. 🫶🏻

The Community Orchestra Project was something always in the back of mind, of gathering a group of students from Eastman Campus, Eastman Community Music School, UofR, alumni, and really anyone else to play jointly. It challenged us to weave this music together with a very (like very) limited amount of rehearsal time. But they always left me feeling inspired after every rehearsal and it’s a privilege to be conducting them. This group is truly kindhearted and supportive. I cannot thank them enough for their kindness. We are in it together y’all!
