Cascade Conducting — Tacoma, WA 2026:

I am honored to share that I attended Cascade as the inaugural recipient of the Ayis Ioannides Fellowship, which allowed me to pursue both composition and conducting tracks. As a conductor, I had the opportunity to conduct the orchestra each day with different repertoire, culminating in a performance at the end of the week. As a composer, I had a piece premiered for sinfonietta (which I got to conduct!), and I attended seminars and lessons. I am so honored to have recieved an award in Ayis’ name, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to study with him in 2024, when I was a participant at Cascade for the first time. I feel so lucky.

I studied conducting with @sarah.ioannides (who is my professor at BU) and Zeke Fetrow, and I took composition lessons and seminars from @drdanielott and @davidludwigmusic. I am so grateful for their kind teaching and for their patience with and thoughtful answers to my many quesitons. They continuously inspire me!

Lastly, I am so grateful to have met such kind and talented musicians! I have learned so much from the other participants, I have made friendships and memories that I hope will last me a lifetime.

There they are.

Not history yet.
Not memory.
Just two people
in the middle of a dance floor
believing the night will last forever.

Pepe with that grin
like he already knew the joke
life was trying to play on him.

Coco
gold dress catching the light
like a small sun
that decided the room deserved warmth.

The mariachi is playing something impossible,
La Macarena translated through trumpets and violins,
because in our world
even pop songs learn how to wear boots.

Tio Javi is somewhere
half storm, half celebration,
being pulled back toward earth
by a woman strong enough
to wrangle love out of chaos.

The fountain breathes
that cool hotel water smell,
like a river wandered indoors
just to watch the party.

And everywhere
people are laughing
like they all accidentally discovered
the same miracle.

Family.
Strangers.
The temporary republic of joy.

I didn’t know then
that this moment
would hide itself inside my spirit.

That decades later
a photograph would unlock the door
and suddenly the room would be alive again.

The music.
The shoes on polished floors.
The stubborn happiness of it all.

Pepe y Coco.

Migrants
with an elementary education
and the audacity
to build a life big enough
for everyone to eat.

Starlite Burger
glowing like a small constellation
in the night of our town.

Not just a business.

A promise.

Proof that love and work
can turn grease and steel
into community.

That resilience
is just another word
for refusing to let the dream die.

Now Coco has crossed the quiet river
where Pepe has been waiting.

I imagine him
already tapping his foot.

Somewhere beyond the stubborn edge of time
the trumpets start again.

Maybe it’s mariachi.

Maybe it’s the latest Latin pop
translated into violins and brass
the way our people always do.

And there they go

Pepe laughing.
Coco spinning.
The dance continuing
like it always meant to.

Because love like that
doesn’t stop.

It migrates.

And every time we remember
every time we gather
every time we feed someone
or laugh too loud in public

the music returns.

And for a moment
the whole world
is that wedding night again.

Moved to Georgia, started my Artist Diploma, landed a Young Artist Program, did many auditions in New York, adopted a cat, visited Binghamton, spent the holidays for the first time away from home, got a church job, picked the piano and the guitar, took hot baths and danced a lot 😌✌🏼
