TW: The following content contains mentions of SA & abuse.

This is an incredibly difficult thing for me to share, but I feel compelled to make my story known to warn others and to make peace with what I went through.

In August of this year, I was SA-ed while under the influence by David Riccobono, my boyfriend at the time, who is a percussionist in the LA Phil. It was an extremely violating and deeply painful betrayal to be assaulted by someone I trusted deeply. Coming to terms with what happened to me—being stripped of my bodily autonomy and disrespected so profoundly—has been an incredibly painful process.

Shortly after the assault took place, David became overtly emotionally abusive, resorting to calling me names and tearing me down in a variety of ways before suddenly ending the relationship. After the relationship ended, I sought to address the harm caused by the assault through a restorative justice process, which focuses on accountability and healing through mediated dialogue. Instead of responding, David chose to block me and several of my friends on social media, avoiding any acknowledgment or accountability.

I am sharing my experience publicly because I suspect I may not be the only person harmed by his actions, nor will I be the last if he continues the behaviors I personally witnessed and experienced. As a person in a position of power within an esteemed organization, he is in a unique place to potentially harm others in the future.

I encourage anyone who has experienced or witnessed his harmful behavior to come forward and reclaim your voice. Raising awareness about harmful behavior like this is essential to protecting ourselves and others. If you have experienced something similar, I urge you to seek support and advocate for accountability. We all deserve to live free from fear and harm.

Sharing this is part of my journey to heal. I refuse to remain silent about what happened. Speaking out is not only my way of reclaiming my story but also a step toward preventing harm and fostering accountability.

I am deeply grateful to those who have supported me as I process and heal from this experience. Their care has made sharing this possible. ❤️ by @hannahcrisw

Viet Thanh Nguyen in his office, Pasadena, CA, June 2023.

Five years ago, during a taping of “Rough Draft with Reza Aslan,” I asked @viet_t_nguyen if I could take his portrait. I was settling back into LA after a short stint on the East Coast for grad school, eager to expand my photography portfolio. He agreed. I then proceeded to not follow up. COVID happened, my career veered away from photography... But last year, we finally made the shoot happen after I messaged him on Facebook. 🤪

“The American War in Vietnam” was my favorite GE course at USC. I unfortunately made myself quite memorable during that class—the day after Trump was elected, I had to go to Viet’s office hours to get approval to take the course, and ended up crying in his office. Truly embarrassing... It’s an incident I’d love for us both to forget, but it’s now so ingrained that I can only look back and laugh. I always sat in the front row of his class. I attended his speaking events around LA (his conversation with Ocean Vuong was a favorite of mine). I read his books and had them signed. You could say I was obsessed. Taking his portraits was an honor and so much fun.

“The Sympathizer,” based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen, premieres tomorrow April 14 on Max.

Thanks to @unsofisticated_ for assisting me on this shoot. taken in Pasadena, California by @hannahcrisw

A year older today 🤍🥳🎂

2 years ago I pasted the affirmation, “Just because this is all I’ve seen, doesn’t mean that it’s all there is. The best is yet to come.” on a sticky note to my computer, hoping that it would ring true in time. 2 years on, I am continually shown just how good life can get. In the past year I have: traveled solo internationally for the first time, took it upon myself to get serious about learning a new language (and got the furthest I’ve ever been in learning a language!), deepened my existing friendships and made amazing new friends, learned new things about myself and have continued to be more curious, adventurous, and happy along the way. The list continues, and life continues to get better and better. I don’t know just how good life can get, and the unknown of it no longer scares me—the best is yet to come.

Ty @caminoriegaa for taking these wonderful pics of me! Custom chain made by me. ✨ by @hannahcrisw
