👻🧠🫀🫁🦴👁 bodies, bodies, bodies👁🦴🫁🫀🧠👻

This time last week I submitted my PhD thesis. I wasn't going to post anything because quite frankly who is in the mood to post a damn thing in these horrific times. I don't want to celebrate when life is unbearable for so many in the world and the UK is continually complicit in genocide and warfare.

But I wanted to mark the submission because it's taken me longer than most (partly because of bereavement, illness, family stuff, and extra projects, but who cares; quality words need time) and this is still quietly frowned upon/shamed in academic communities (screw those who breed this toxiticty, you are not the change the academy needs!). I wanted to mark it for the girl who worked multiple jobs for several years before applying in order to fund it (and had zero help or encouragement trying to find funding whilst there!). For the girl who lived at home in order to complete it, and for the girl who was sometimes treated like she didn't deserve to be there or wasn't the right "type" of person to be studying at that level. And for the girl whose writing and ideas weren't always understood or appreciated (not "academic" enough or too "sensitive" and "subtle" in her prose style - ffs! How gendered can you be?! Embrace sensitivity and subtlety people - academia needs more of it, in my opinion). That girl was me (yeah, I'm still a girl in my head). But if you feel like that too, whilst studying or doing anything, then know you're not alone and know you have a right to be there, to take up that space and push into what you want to do. Academia or whatever sphere you're part of NEEDS people like you - don't let them tell you otherwise.

✍️🪞'Drawing is this bidding; it is this opening up; the mirror tipping the saved spaces and faces upside down, onto the page, at once betraying and saving you.'🪞✍️

Sooooo super thrilled, honoured, humbled and (still doing a lil dance) ecstatic to have an extract of my chapter on Louise Bourgeois and drawing in @prototypepubs' annual anthology, Prototype 5.

My extract, 'A Series of Drawings in Circles' is a kind of obsessive love letter to Bourgeois and looks at how drawing is a mode and means to deal with fear, trauma and repressed memories. This was a win after a difficult few months with bereavement and loss. Bourgeois blessing me from the other side of the mirror🪞 😉

Very happy to be amongst writers who I deeply love and admire (check their work out too please: @rojbinarjen @alex.aspden @kashif1917 @cccrrll @sharon_kivland).

All my thanks to the inimitable Jess Chandler who just rocks; who is a kind and awesome editor, and makes the most beautiful books.🖤🕷🖤

Loved, loved, LOVED chairing this event at the shiny new @waterstonesbatterseapwrstn with the unparalleled artist and writer @lizzy_stewart and the equally inimitable art historian, critic and writer @chloelashby on their latest works, #thewreck & #familyfriends, two compelling novels that need to be moved to the top of your tbr pile.

We discussed the challenges and joys of writing fiction with bigger casts of characters, literary and artistic inspirations, communal living and art circles, a new possible - though century-old - genre we're crowning as "vacation literature", class and how it impacts motivations and relational dynamics, blurred lines within decades-old close friendships, the seductive descriptions of food, drawing as a form of editing and so much more.

You can enjoy the summer all over again by buying these sumptuous reads in every good bookshop and online now.

All my thanks to Henry at Waterstones for hosting us and supporting the event, to Juliet Dudley for making it happen too, and to the super lovely crowd that came to hear us and asked such astute questions.

👁💧🌊'Seer-like, their eyes opaque to us, but perfectly perspicacious to them, crying, perhaps, resets seeing and, therefore, being, in a whole new light. Sometimes, in order to see clearly, we, like Kahraman’s women, must shut our eyes to appearances around us in order to perceive, to let be, to set free, that which lies within.'🌊💧👁

👁I had the immense pleasure and privilege of writing about the recent (@pilarcorriasgallery) exhibition 'what cannot be said will be wept' by the exceptional artist and thinker, Hayv Kahraman (@hayvkahraman) for @elephantmagazine, some of which can be read above in fragments.

💧Kahraman is one of my favourite artists. Her paintings are exquisite and never fail to make me gasp. This new suite of paintings is as compelling, moving, intelligent and beautifully composed as those from her former exhibitions, 'Gut Feelings' (previously shown at the brilliant @themosaicrooms), "She has no name' at Pilar Corrias and many other shown in renowned galleries around the world. I'm always struck by how her forms bring together philosophy, literary and cultural theory, neurobiology, ecology and decolonial ideas (and forces) together. It's incredible. All in the superlative corporeal forms of her women who subversively grapple with colonial prejudices and violence within their collective body, reclaiming and reconstituting themselves before our very eyes. In this show, their teary dissolution is their resolution, their unmasking the future remaking of their own forms and the earth's.

🌊There's still 2 days left to see these stunning paintings at Pilar Corrias. Do go and see them; they're a balm in this burning hot, melting world.

📚 NEW LIT COURSE ALERT 📚

I'll be teaching a taster course, 'Introduction to Global Literature', at City Lit (@citylit) on Saturday 19th September, in-college.

📖We will be looking at Mohsin Hamid's 'Exit West' and Julie Otsuka's 'The Buddha in the Attic', and considering fictional and historic migrations, migrating narratives and narrators, and what makes these two brilliant novels essential reads of our time.

🤔We will also be asking what Global Literature is, how it differs from or overlaps with Postcolonial and Comparative literatures, and why it's a rich seam of literary study.

It's a course for any level, for those who want to refresh their literary knowledge or for book lovers who are simply keen to read and discuss new texts.

🐚🪹🌱'Glittering like jewels in the late afternoon sun, Bellas’ ceramic forms remind us of our own source of nourishment, our own inner reserves of creative power, our own dormant joys and cares waiting to be discovered in the light of future days.'🌱🪹🐚

🌱A belated post, but one no less precious to me. I had the immense honour of writing an exhibition essay for the brilliant artist & beautiful human @blinkybellas / @blossombows____ for their gorgeous solo exhibition, Corms, at @cable_depot back in the new year (for the show in March 2026). This piece of writing was published alongside another essay written for the same show by the tremendous Paul Carey Kent (another honour to share space alongside a superb thinker, writer and critic). I was too ill to post before, but it was such an immense privilege to write on Bellas' work and talk with them at length - writing and conversations that I'll cherish and from which I have learnt a lot.

🪹In the essay, I discuss the ecological philosophies and queer rhizomatic thoughts behind Bellas' artwork. I look at Kimmerer's ideas of nature and abundance, the etymology and ecology of corms and bulbs and tubers, Bachelard's words on the embodied space of nests and shells, notions of the communal in gardening, gathering and gleaning, but above all the rare, singular, soft yet strong beauty of Bellas' jewel-like ceramic works.

💕🙏🪱“I would rather learn from an ancestor who is very small, who I have no sense of, but who has a lot of wisdom…I’m trying to create this sacred space to honour that,” artist Rae-Yen Song 🪱🙏💕

🪱For @elephantmagazine I had the immense honour of talking to the inimitable Rae-Yen Song (@raeyensong) about the mini yet mighty microbeasts of our world, in particular the sand mason worm, which armours itself in the skins and sandy debris of other marine life along our coastlines and, in the artist's recent exhibitions, becomes an ancestral sculpture-cum-costume for #folkestonetriennial and currently @glasgowtramway

🪼We also talked about Song's magnificent, transportive and awe-inspiring solo exhibition •~TUA~• 大眼 •~MAK~• at Tramway, Glasgow, and delved into its ambiguous, part-sub-aquatic, part-celestial plane worlds within a world environment. Inspired by tua mak, an ancestor who died at sea, Song movingly and marvellously traces the various iterations and transformations this entity undergoes and becomes. Exploring migrations, ecologies, epitemologies, spiritual and earthly, and the modes to celebrate and renew ancestral ties, knowledge and communion, Song's latest work saturates us with experiences and visions beyond our imagination, and awakes us to the possibility of thinking, seeing and doing anew.

💛🖤 '...I glimmer in this light / My body pressed / My two eyes open / This must be / Like being born / My mouth turns towards the Sun' - Osman Yousefzada 💛🖤

Mesmerising and moving in equal measure, @osmanstudio's 'A Home That Will Not Behave' both poetically and playfully re-orders and re-conceives how domestic spaces act on and are shaped by the bodies that inhabit them.

Seeping into the blue of the gallery walls, his glowing conceptions of home enlarge the boundaries of the canvas frame, teasing and tearing at the demarcation between memory and material, empirical and embodied experience.

Enveloped by rooms, queered figures envelope one another, dazzling in their pattern as much as they are, at times, in tension with them. Fizzing with the tensions and taints, the condensation and residues of past encounters and current ones, these bodies reverberate beyond the positions and places they are situated in, speaking out into the gallery space and our own internal worlds too.

📣 British Art Legends returns with the fantastic Cameroonian British artist Kialy Tihngang, whose practise explores Blackness, queerness and Britishness, and the structural oppressions surrounding these intersecting identities.

🌊It's such a huge privilege to be talking with Kialy @kialytihngang for @faneproductions about her incredible repertoire of work, which spans film, sculpture, textiles and performance to explore the misrepresentation, extraction and demonization of Black, particularly West African, cultural practises, throughout history.

🐚Using elaborate handmade sets, graphics, props and an aesthetic that blends retrofuturism and absurdism with the humour of Nollywood and the tropes of body horror, Kialy challenges the colonial histories and euro-centric narratives surrounding Black queer identities and bodies, Cameroonian culture and politics, and notions of Britishness.

🦐From Neyinka and the Silver Gong, that reimagines a precolonial Scotland where formerly enslaved African people have escaped and formed a clan in uncharted Scottish islands, to her latest film, Out of Office, an auto-ethnographic exploration of misogynoir and neo-capitalism, Kialy draws on personal experiences to reimagine Black British and Cameroonian histories.
