weekend recap 📚🍹📖💕

the first @rvabookedandboozy summer retreat was absolutely incredible! morning yoga, bookish crafts, delicious food, a zoom with @annabelmonaghan to chat about our retreat book Dolly All The Time, reading time, relaxation, games, and so much laughter, all at a gorgeous house in the mountains 🌄💜

Day two of our summer reading retreat was packed to the brim with memorable activities and delicious food. ✨

After morning yoga and yogurt bowls, we dove into crafting bookmarks and tote bags. A salad bar for lunch was a refreshing moment ahead of an afternoon of reading and relaxing. When happy hour rolled around we were treated to a special video call with Annabel Monaghan to talk all about her latest book. We rounded out the evening with noodle bowls for dinner and ice cream sundaes while a storm raged outside. All in all, it’s been an especially memorable weekend in the mountains. 💕⛰️📖 taken in Massanutten, Virginia by @hannahnowack

The last time I was gearing up to start a new job, I took a little jaunt from NYC down to Virginia to camp, read, and relax for a few days. (Hilariously, I also stopped in RVA to see friends for a few days, not knowing I’d one day call the city home.)

So it felt like a full-circle moment when I trekked from Virginia up to Quebec to camp with my brother last weekend. In addition to celebrating his birthday, I once again read and relaxed ahead of starting an exciting new job very soon. ☺️ The entire trip was restorative and healing in a way I very much needed after nearly a year of career uncertainty. I decided this hilarious gem needed a permanent spot on my feed, and not for the reasons you might be thinking. The truth is, I spent years ensuring this page felt as professional and curated as possible. I obsessed over making it an extension of my work persona.

To what end? I lost myself in the quest to give everything to my job. And then when that job let me go, I realized you can’t cash in brownie points—I wasn’t paid to tout them on IG, I wasn’t paid for all the overtime, I wasn’t paid for the emotional labor of being their endless advocate amid their never-ending poor publicity.

So this is me taking back my corner of the internet that should’ve been mine all along.

And the funniest part? I wasn’t actually chugging bubbly here. After a modest little toast, I was being silly chasing the dregs of an empty bottle and this photo was the result. Something that captures the energy I’m glad is coming back to me. A reminder that I enjoy being silly at my core and I can have fun and still have a kicka** career—those don’t have to be mutually exclusive. by @hannahnowack

I honestly didn’t think my unemployment would extend past my birthday, but on the eve of ushering in another year, I find myself grateful for this unexpected season. For the freelance work that’s tiding me over. For the time to volunteer, to make art, to move my body, and to build friendships. I’m choosing to focus on the good stuff I trust 33 has in store. 💕 taken in Richmond, Virginia by @hannahnowack

As I’ve navigated this season of unemployment, I’ve explored a myriad of cathartic creative outlets to anchor me and relieve stress. Recently, that’s looked like making some patchwork sweatshirts and bedazzling things (notably my Rx bottles) to add sparkle to everyday life. A new sewing project won’t find me a job, but it will help ensure my mind is in a healthy place to hit the ground running when the perfect job comes along.
