A look back at the AILA Victoria Landscape Architecture Awards, held a few weeks ago.

It was great to see members of the Hansen team come together for the evening, with Principal Craig Czarny taking on MC duties and Director of Landscape Architecture Andrew Partos speaking in his role as AILA Victoria President.

Andrew spoke about multiculturalism in practice and the value of different cultural perspectives in landscape architecture, including how they can shape the way we approach design and respond to the communities we work with.

We were pleased to have Craig and Andrew represent Hansen on the night and to be part of an evening celebrating the work and people contributing to landscape architecture across Victoria.

A proud moment for us at Hansen, with Director Gerhana Waty joining the Multicultural Association of Property Professionals (MAPP) Committee as Head of Impact.

Born in Indonesia, educated in Singapore and Australia, and now based in Melbourne, Gerhana brings both professional expertise and lived experience to conversations around culture, belonging and who our cities are designed for.

Greater cultural diversity in the built environment starts with creating space for different perspectives to shape the industry, not simply be represented within it. At Hansen, we believe better places come from understanding the diversity of people and communities we design for. We value an inclusive profession, the exchange of different perspectives, and contributing beyond our day-to-day project work where we can help create meaningful change.

Gerhana’s appointment strongly aligns with those values. In her new role, she will help MAPP translate conversations around diversity and belonging into meaningful action, connecting diverse lived experiences with industry leadership and helping turn shared values into tangible outcomes for the profession, the places we shape and the communities we serve.

We’re proud to support Gerhana in contributing her time and expertise to this important work. by @hansenpartnership

Thanks to Mark Reynolds from Arbor Survey Pty Ltd for joining us in the office this week as part of our regular Lunch and Learn sessions.

Mark shared an overview of Amendment VC315, focusing on the proposed changes to Clause 52.37 (Canopy Trees) and the updated residential canopy tree standards. It was a great opportunity for the team to discuss the changes and what they could mean for our work.

Our Lunch and Learn sessions bring people into the office to share knowledge, discuss current issues and hear new perspectives. We really enjoy having visitors who bring different experiences and insights to the table, and the conversations that come from bringing people together.

Thanks again, Mark. We look forward to the next one. by @hansenpartnership

Amendment VC315 introduces a series of changes to Victoria’s residential planning provisions, refining how development is assessed across single homes, townhouses, low-rise and mid-rise development.

The changes clarify how standards apply to new development, refine tree canopy requirements, reinstate consideration of Section 173 Agreements, replace the STORM tool with Blue Factor, and introduce a new definition of deep-soil.

So, what has actually changed, and what does it mean for projects?

We’ve unpacked the key changes and what they mean for the way we plan and design housing.

Yesterday morning, Hansen welcomed a group of Japanese planning delegates to our Melbourne studio, alongside the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA), for a discussion on planning, urban regeneration and placemaking in Melbourne and Victoria.

We started with Kat Smith from PIA providing an overview of the Institute and its role in supporting the planning profession. Hansen Director and PIA Vice President, Jane Keddie then shared insights into planning in Victoria, including the role of green infrastructure in shaping more liveable and resilient places before Hansen Managing Director Damian Iles followed with a look at Melbourne’s approach to urban regeneration and placemaking, drawing on projects including Anstey Village in Brunswick and Wesley Place, where our Hansen studio is based.

It was a special opportunity to welcome our Japanese peers to Hansen and share perspectives on how cities and places are planned, designed and transformed. by @hansenpartnership

What happens when ecological restoration is considered from the beginning of an infrastructure project?

This Biodiversity Month, we’re taking a closer look at how ecological restoration can be considered alongside infrastructure, access and movement.

For the Gipps Street Elevated Walkway, this meant introducing more than 100 indigenous trees including a collection of wattles, gums and paperbark trees; and 18,000 indigenous and native plants along the Birrarung.

The design of the elevated walkway responds to the retention of native trees along the embankment, the natural meanders of the river and provides a new, universally accessible connection to the Capital City Trail.

Here, infrastructure and landscape restoration work together, improving access while supporting the recovery of the riverbank. by @hansenpartnership

A great night at Hansen HQ last Wednesday for the Women’s Planning Network Emerging Experts Series.

The session brought together women from across planning and allied professions for an open conversation covering how they got started, what they enjoy about the role, preparing and presenting expert evidence, and the less talked about side of the role, including building confidence, managing pressure and self-care.

Hansen Director Sandra Rigo was joined by Julia Bell MPIA (Urbis), Hilary Marshall (Ratio Consultants) and Jenna Forbes (SMEC), with Lisa Kendal (Planning Panels Victoria) moderating.

A valuable discussion with plenty of practical advice, honest experiences and insights for those looking to develop their own path as an expert.

Thank you to the Women’s Planning Network for bringing the series to Hansen, and to everyone who joined us for the evening. by @hansenpartnership

As Street for People champions, we are excited to see a more integrated approach to movement, place and urban design emerging in Victoria’s updated guidance.

The Victorian Government has released Urban Design Guidelines for Victoria 2.0, alongside the updated Movement and Place 2.0 framework, strengthening the connection between how we plan for movement and how we design streets as places for people.

We’re proud to have supported the work in its early stages, advising on the structure of the guidelines and exploring how street types, urban typologies and place visions can connect across the two frameworks. Seeing that integration now reflected in the updated guidance is particularly rewarding.

It’s also great to see our very own Victoria Street, Kerang, featured, demonstrating how people-focused streets and place-led design can translate to a regional Victorian context.

Together, the updates provide a stronger platform for thinking about streets not simply as movement corridors, but as places that support everyday life, identity, activity and connection.

Swipe through to explore the updates and what they mean for urban design across Victoria. by @hansenpartnership
