💬 do you look at photos of them? Share your fav in the comments (now that we can comment with a photo!)

#imissmydad #grievingdaughter #griefsupport #griefandloss #griefcommunity I don't often look at photos of my dad because it hurts.

At first it was strange and deeply painful to see him so alive when he was so not alive. I wanted to see them anyway, even when it hurt. I still don't know whether I wanted proof that he was alive, or the reminder that he isn't anymore.

Tears would stream down my face and I felt my heart physically hurt.

There is one in particular. One of the special photos of the five of us, the entire family, where we looked so effortlessly happy. I included it in his memorial photo slideshow. by @happy.grieving

💭 "You should be grateful"? My dad is dead.

The first time I was taught about a gratitude practice as a tool for emotional resilience, I remember feeling so angry. What do you mean I need to feel grateful, or name what I'm grateful for, when literally my life is falling apart? I was feeling basically subhuman. And you're telling me I need to name things I am grateful for, and that's going to fix me?

Being told you should be grateful that there's food on the table, or a roof over your head. That's not gratitude. That's guilt tripping. You should be grateful for what I've done for you, is not gratitude. It's people pressuring you to say thank you. You should be grateful for the memories is not gratitude. It is minimising the space for you to express the pain for what you've loss. In fact anything that starts with "you should be grateful..." is not gratitude in its pure form.

What real gratitude is when you feel something and naturally, you're like, oh, this is quite nice. This feels good. Those little glimmers can be where gratitude starts.

And if you don't like the word gratitude, as much as I didn't, change the word so it fits you. Mine is "oh, this feels good". Like when I was walking and it was hot, and then there was a breeze. Or I had cold water. Oh, this feels good.

What you're doing is letting yourself notice the things in your life that are okay. They don't cancel out the grief. Having something good doesn't make the bad stuff less bad. It just lets you hold both at the same time. Emotionally, that can be like restoring a sense of balance for a grieving soul.

🗨️ What's one small thing that felt good this week, even alongside the grief?

Even when life is good, I grieve the life that might have been. Forever missing my dad.

If you're carrying this too, know that mourning the life that might have been isn't dwelling or being dramatic. You can be grateful for the life you have and still grieve the one you were supposed to have. Both can be true at the same time.

This kind of loss is quieter, and people rarely name them, but it is real. I'm grieving moments that never happened and a future that was quietly rewritten without my consent.

✈️ People see me travelling the world hosting retreats and tell me I'm so lucky. They forget that my dad dying is the reason I started Grief Trips.

My story is not unique. So many of us travel after loss. Because we realise life is short. Because we are living for our person the way they would want us to. Because we're looking for something that makes us feel alive again.

It can feel a little lonely when people only see the travels, and not the loss behind them.

At Grief Trips, travelling while grieving is the whole idea. It is proof that you feel grief differently when it is seen and held by others who get it, and you allow grief to come alongside joy.

And when the loss behind it is witnessed, our hearts for us to appreciate how lucky we are to have found grief friends in each other, given that we can't change our losses. It's hard to explain this with words without experiencing it yourself.

💛 If you've heard all of these platitudes and hate them, you're not oversensitive. Grief doesn't need a bright side. It needs someone willing to sit in it with you

📞 Happy Grieving Group Program doesn't do toxic positivity. It's a space to share the moment you heard one of these, hear why it isn't you being oversensitive, and get words for replying to people who meant well but had no idea what they were saying.

🤍 Weddings hit differently after a loss. It often feels like being happy for the couple and wrecked by grief in the same breath.

🤍 Everyone is carrying something. You just can't see it. So we walk past each other and carry it on our own.

Grief Trips takes small groups of grieving people away for a week for grief workshops and real travel experiences.
