𝙎𝙤𝙛𝙩 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙧

The unexpected MVP of this trip was all the incredible images, symbols, evidence of human hands that I encountered at the archaeological museums that I visited.

The sacred chasm of Kynegotafkos was a particular favorite, “. . . hundreds of bovid figures had been deposited together. . .” What would it be like to be an earthen bovine, formed with humble supplications and hopes and dreams and human thumbprints and palms, to be left at a sacred site? The volume and variety.

Museums are exhausting and I’m glad I gave myself permission to flit about from one display to the next, only lingering and pondering over the things that called to me. No need to performatively read every plaque and gaze, listlessly, at every object… Playful. Free. Gorgeous. Just like how my hair feels in the Greek wind.

ℜ𝔬𝔬𝔪 𝔞𝔫𝔡 𝔅𝔬𝔞𝔯𝔡 𝔣𝔬𝔯 𝔐𝔶 ℭ𝔥𝔦𝔩𝔡 𝔞𝔫𝔡 ℑ depicts an ivory-billed woodpecker (𝘊𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴), official status critically endangered but more than likely extinct. The bird is painted to life-scale. This male, with an injured wing, is tied, outraged, to a table. Offerings of grubs and miniature apples are refused. The bird would refuse to eat and die three days after being captured.

Art for Everyone at BPL kicks off the new year with a solo show by watercolorist Sophie McVicar Tate. "Gathered Sanctuary" opens on Friday, January 23, in the Central Library's Fourth Floor Gallery. Inspired by scientific illustration and religious iconography, McVicar Tate’s ethereal depictions of animals reflect a holistic, sometimes contradictory interpretation of the natural world. A reception for the artist will take place on Friday, February 13, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. To learn more about McVicar Tate and her work, visit her website at https://www.sophiemcvicar.co/.
