I have big news! Last time I did this it was to announce a move across the country; this time it’s a move across an ocean. Nine years after graduating from Stanford, I’m going back to school! In the UK!

There are still some things to be finalized, but unless something weird happens in the next couple months, I’m off to study Philosophy of AI at the University of York. My focus of study will be AI ethics—specifically, generative AI (think ChatGPT and DALL-E) as it relates to creative/artistic fields like writing and illustration.

My previous tech ethics work in undergrad and earlier in my career focused on self-driving cars, so this is a new area for me, but one I’m excited for, especially after my recent work with large language models at Scale AI.

We’ll be keeping Leaving a Clean Wake running while I’m away to the best of our abilities. There’s certainly a lot to be said about leaving a clean wake (or lack thereof) within the tech industry and around AI! Stay tuned…

Textures of Vashon // snapshots from the beach

Most days when the tide is out and it’s not raining I go for walks along the beach below the residency house. The beaches here are rocky and, like many hiking trails, require some attention downward to avoid twisting an ankle or taking a tumble. This perilous substrate is a mix of stones and shells, often encrusted with barnacles.

Looking up is important, but take some time to look down too. You might enjoy what you see.

I’ve been quiet on this for a while as I’ve been finalizing logistics and paperwork and such, but figured I should let people know I’m going away for a while.

I am SO excited to be returning to the land of my early childhood to attend the @vashonartistresidency and then go traipsing around Seattle! A lot of people know me as a photographer and/or performer, but I’m going to the residency as a writer. I’ll be working on what I’ve been describing as a historical magic realism piece about a lighthouse facing automation. Also some ghosts. I have a ton of research and work to do, and it’s kind of terrifying, but also kind of exhilarating.

So yeah, I’ll be gone for the whole of April. Wish me luck, and I’ll see you in May! (Unless you’re involved in Pride & Prejudice & Dragons, in which case I’ll see you in a few days.) ✨Fun News!✨ // I’ve been sitting on this for a while, and now I am so excited to share that this photo of mine will be on display at @theglasgowgalleryofphotography this month!! I’m so honored to be included among some other amazing photographers in this exhibition 😭💜

I took this photo last spring, on a backpacking trip along the Virginia/West Virginia border (the same place where I saw the cloud river a couple weeks ago!) with my sister. We were camped a little below the summit of Halfmoon Mountain, and had a perfect west-facing overlook at our camp from which to watch the sunset. Wedged into a crevice halfway down a rock outcropping, I was near a pine tree and perfectly positioned to put its branches in silhouette against the setting sun. (I posted another photo from that same night a while back.)

Above the Cloud River // I’d debated even setting an alarm to get up for sunrise since it had been so foggy (and often outright rainy) the past couple days, but I had to get an early start anyway to get home with time to start on post-backpacking tasks and finish preparing to head out the next morning for a different trip, so I figured I might as well go for it, and boy am I glad I did!

There were about 30-45 minutes to either side of the actual sunrise when it was clear, before quickly becoming full fog again. During that brief interlude, though, I was treated to this view of the neighboring hills emerging from a veritable river of cloud winding through the valley.

My campsite had a few different overlooks at/next to it, so I spent pretty much the whole clear bit going back and forth among them to admire the valley as the sun came up. A bit of a breeze came up too, and I could see the mist, by then golden-tinted from the sun, drifting gently down the slopes as the fog rolled back in. Before long, everything was fully shrouded again. (Swipe to the end for the gathering-fog view lol)

I kinda like the white-frame look to avoid cropping but also I am very lazy…TBD if I’ll keep doing it 😆
