On the last #throwbackthursday of January, here are ten photos from 2016. During that year, I:

- Finished freshman year at Duke University
- Subbed as the alternate on the saber team, even though my primary weapon was foil
- Watched my big sister graduate from Stanford University (with a Firestone medal for her thesis, no less!)
- Went on a family trip to Boulder, CO, where we hiked the Flatirons
- Earned my Open Water scuba certification
- Hung out with my standard poodle, Gwinna, the best dog ever (rest in peace, sweet girl)
- Took my parents to a basketball game at Cameron Indoor Stadium after I got back to campus for my sophomore year
- Studied organic chemistry, molecular biology, and advanced French language and culture
- Spent a wonderful Christmas at home

Hard to believe it was all ten years ago. Here’s to another ten filled with adventures, amazing places, and wonderful people.

My badass big sister is halfway through a master’s degree at the University of York, so my parents and I decided to meet her in the UK for Christmas.

I tried to limit myself to 30 seconds, but I failed. Featured locations include the York Minster, the Bath Guildhall Market, the Pump Room by the Roman Baths, the Kennedy and Avon Canal, Bath On Ice at the Royal Victoria Park, and the Bath Rugby Stadium.

We’ve had a wonderful holiday filled with laughs, eggnog, fruitcake, museums, and lots of tea. I’m sending everyone love and best wishes into the New Year. ❤️🥳

I have big news! Last time I did this it was to announce a move across the country; this time it’s a move across an ocean. Nine years after graduating from Stanford, I’m going back to school! In the UK!

There are still some things to be finalized, but unless something weird happens in the next couple months, I’m off to study Philosophy of AI at the University of York. My focus of study will be AI ethics—specifically, generative AI (think ChatGPT and DALL-E) as it relates to creative/artistic fields like writing and illustration.

My previous tech ethics work in undergrad and earlier in my career focused on self-driving cars, so this is a new area for me, but one I’m excited for, especially after my recent work with large language models at Scale AI.

We’ll be keeping Leaving a Clean Wake running while I’m away to the best of our abilities. There’s certainly a lot to be said about leaving a clean wake (or lack thereof) within the tech industry and around AI! Stay tuned…

My family spent five days in Vieux Québec this December. It was our third time in the city: our first visit was via sailboat in 2005, and we returned in the summer of 2018. This time, we wanted to see the city during winter, and it did not disappoint.

Trip highlights include:
- Dinner at @legende.restaurant—fine dining sourced exclusively from Québec
- Riding wooden toboggans in front of the iconic Château Frontenac, a tradition since 1884
- Ice canoeing with @canot.a.glace.experience, a truly unique excursion involving hot chocolate, a sauna, and, yes, ice
- Dinner at @taniere3, sister restaurant to Légende—fine dining in underground vaults, and one of the best meals of my life

I only wish we could have stayed longer. Québec, je t’aime ♥️
