Now in a complete edition: the five Piano Concertos that represent twenty years of Beethoven’s creative effort, and to crown the set, the Choral Fantasy, an early version of the Ode to Joy. On period instruments Kristian Bezuidenhout and the Freiburger Barockorchester, conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado, rebalance the forces and timbres to restore all the daring that must surely have stunned the works’ first audiences.

Réunis dans leur intégralité, les cinq Concertos pour piano de Beethoven dessinent près de vingt années de création. La Fantaisie chorale, esquisse de l’Ode à la Joie, couronne l’ensemble. Sur instruments d’époque, Kristian Bezuidenhout, le Freiburger Barockorchester et Pablo Heras-Casado rééquilibrent timbres et puissances, et rendent à ces pages l’audace qui dut saisir leurs premiers auditeurs.

Die während einer 20jährigen Schaffenszeit entstandenen fünf Klavierkonzerte von Beethoven sind hier alle versammelt, und gekrönt wird das Ganze von der Chorfantasie, die als Vorgängerin der Ode an die Freude gilt. Auf historischen Instrumenten spielend, gewichten Kristian Bezuidenhout und das Freiburger Barockorchester unter der Leitung von Pablo Heras-Casado Klänge und Kraftverhältnisse neu und verleihen dieser Musik wieder jene Kühnheit, welche die ersten Zuhörer sicherlich ergriffen hat.

Chout– a savage farce – is one of Prokofiev’s most unbridled, riotous orchestral pieces, crafted with mercurial inventiveness, its abrasive rhythms and brilliant colours pervaded by a sarcastic, dark humour. At the head of the NDR Radiophilharmonie, Stanislav Kochanovsky here presents the rarely-recorded original full-length ballet. Its companion piece, the Classical Symphony, offers a piquant counterpoint: beneath its ostensible Haydnesque elegance it exudes Prokofiev’s irony and his quirky penchant for displacement.

Farce féroce, Chout compte parmi les partitions les plus libres et les plus débridées de Prokofiev, qui y déploie une invention orchestrale fulgurante – rythmes acérés, couleurs éclatantes et sarcasme grinçant. À la tête de la NDR Radiophilharmonie, Stanislav Kochanovsky nous en propose ici la version intégrale, rarement gravée au disque. En regard, la Symphonie “Classique” en offre un savoureux contrepoint: sous une apparente élégance à la Haydn, Prokofiev y distille déjà son ironie et son sens du décalage.
