I had the 2 clearest signs from the universe that the life I had planned wasn’t actually the life I was meant to have...

At 17, I joined the RAF.

Then I came home on a weekend off and was involved in a bad car accident.

I still planned to go back once I’d recovered, but while I was off I met Chris - who is now my husband.

When I was finally due to return to the RAF, Chris and I went out for a meal two days before...

And we were involved in ANOTHER car accident.

Two car accidents felt like a pretty clear sign from the universe that the RAF wasn’t where I was supposed to be.

So I left.

I’d always been good with numbers, so I got an apprenticeship in accountancy and qualified after 5 years of studying.

I worked my way up into senior positions in accountancy practices and finance roles within businesses.

Then came another little nudge from the universe 😂

After my second maternity leave, I took a new job at an accountancy practice.

It had been sold to me with lots of promises...

The reality was totally different.

After having the freedom of being at home with my girls, I hated every second of being there.

And that awful job finally gave me the push I needed.

In July 2022, I started Harmony Accounting.

Throughout my career, I’d always felt female business owners were underrepresented.

I’d also seen how intimidating accountancy could feel when everything was full of jargon and people were made to feel like they *should* understand their numbers.

I wanted to do things differently.

I wanted women to have an accountant they could actually talk to and ask questions without feeling embarrassed.

Someone who would explain their finances simply, rather than expecting them to already know the answers.

Looking back, those two car accidents completely changed the direction of my life.

They led me to Chris, accountancy and eventually Harmony.

And that awful job gave me the guts to finally start it.

Now, 4 years later, I’ve gone from RAF dreams to Spreadsheet Queen 😂 with 200+ clients and a business I’m incredibly proud of.

Life definitely didn’t go to plan.

And I’m VERY glad it didn’t. ❤️

Things you should probably know before enquiring with us…

I won’t ask you to know all your numbers before we speak.

That’s why people hire us.

It’s not always about making more money, sometimes it’s about understanding what you’re already making and using it better.

And remember, success isn’t just about how much your business turns over, it’s about what that business is actually giving you and the life you want to live ❤️

I LOVE spending money 😂⁠
⁠
I’m a self-confessed shopaholic, so believe me when I say this filter was needed in my business too.⁠
⁠
Because it’s very easy to convince yourself that something is a “business expense”...⁠
⁠
New course? Business expense.⁠
⁠
Another bit of software? Business expense.⁠
⁠
Something everyone else seems to be buying? Obviously I need that too 😂⁠
⁠
But just because you can buy something through your business doesn’t necessarily mean you should.⁠
⁠
So now, before I spend, I use what my clients know as the Sam Spending Filter.⁠
⁠
Do I need it?⁠
⁠
Will I use it?⁠
⁠
Can I afford it?⁠
⁠
What will it return?⁠
⁠
Is now the right time?⁠
⁠
It doesn’t mean I don’t invest in my business.⁠
⁠
I absolutely do.⁠
⁠
It just means I’m making the decision intentionally, rather than spending the money and thinking about it afterwards.⁠
⁠
And sometimes the answer isn’t NO.⁠
⁠
It’s just NOT YET.⁠
⁠

“Can I put this through the business?”⁠

Probably one of the questions I get asked the most 😂⁠
⁠
And I get why.⁠
⁠
There are so many different things you’re spending money on when you run a business, and it isn’t always obvious what counts as a business expense and what doesn’t.⁠
⁠
But there is one question you can ask yourself that makes it MUCH simpler...⁠
⁠
“Is this wholly and exclusively for my business?”⁠
⁠
Basically - did you buy it for the purpose of running your business?⁠
⁠
If yes, you’re heading in the right direction.⁠
⁠
Of course, because this is tax, there are exceptions and slightly different rules depending on the expense (it couldn’t possibly be completely straightforward could it 😂).⁠
⁠
But I never want you to feel like you need to understand loads of complicated tax jargon just to know what you can and can’t claim.⁠
⁠
So let’s make this useful...⁠
⁠
Drop an expense you’re unsure about in the comments and I’ll tell you whether it could be a business expense 👇⁠

Come on a business retreat with me ✈️☀️

I went on Kate’s retreat last year and loved it so much that when she announced she was doing it again in Spain, I think I booked within about 0.2 seconds 😂

Four days away from normal life, actually having the time and headspace to think about my business properly, with a group of women who completely get it.

Here’s what we got up to ➡️

Day 1 ☀️

After a VERY early start, I arrived in gorgeous Moraira and immediately thought… yep, I can cope with doing business here 😂

First stop after unpacking was Lunch, sangria and a fab chat up with @lilachrltd

Then we had our first session before an amazing welcome dinner.

And this is one of my favourite things about this retreat, some of the best conversations happen outside the actual sessions. Sitting around a table talking about business, life, what’s working, what isn’t… with people you don’t have to explain yourself to first!

Day 2 was where we properly got into it 📝

We looked at the business we’re actually trying to build — not just more revenue, more clients, more growth — but what we want our businesses to give us in return.

What does it need from me?
What do I need from it?
And does what I’m doing now actually support the life I want?

Then lots of breakout chats, ideas flying around, plans starting to form.

The day ended with rooftop drinks and dinner because ✨balance✨ 😂

Day 3 started with a sunrise walk and coffee by the marina, which already feels approximately 700% calmer than opening Outlook first thing 😂

We had a mindset session with @mindfulness_life_coach which was amazing. Then we looked properly at our offers and actually scored them, which was SO interesting.

There were things in my business that make sense on paper, but when I really looked at them I realised… I don’t actually enjoy doing these anymore.

And I think that’s something we forget as businesses evolve. You’re allowed to change your mind. Something can be profitable and still not deserve a place in the business you’re building now.

Plus there was pool time. Obviously. ☀️😂

FreeAgent or Xero… which one should you actually be using? 👀⁠

The answer is, it depends on your business.⁠
⁠
I use both with clients and they both do the job, but I tend to recommend them for different stages of business.⁠
⁠
If you’re a smaller or newer business and you want something simple that doesn’t feel overwhelming, I really like FreeAgent.⁠
⁠
It can even be free depending on who you bank with, which is always a bonus!⁠
⁠
If your business is growing, you’re using lots of different systems or taking payments in different currencies, I’d usually lean towards Xero.⁠
⁠
It has more integrations and gives you more options as your business becomes more complex.⁠
⁠
Neither is automatically “better”.⁠
⁠
It’s about choosing the one that suits your business and what you actually need - because there’s no point paying for loads of fancy features you’re never going to use.⁠
⁠
And your accounting software definitely shouldn’t be another thing that makes you scared to look at your numbers 😂⁠
⁠
Which are you using - Xero or FreeAgent? And more importantly… do you actually like it?! 👇⁠

A few things about me that probably don’t fit the stereotypical accountant image 😂⁠

I probably spend too much money every month.⁠
⁠
Shopping has always been my thing and I absolutely notice what everyone is wearing 👀⁠
⁠
I don’t know everything either.⁠
⁠
Yes, I’ve been a Chartered Accountant for 20 years, but I still ask other accountants and experts questions when something isn’t my area.⁠
⁠
I hate talking to HMRC just as much as everyone else does 😂⁠
⁠
And don’t even get me started on UK VAT...⁠
⁠
But I absolutely LOVE seeing my clients win.⁠
⁠
Whether that’s finally understanding their numbers, feeling confident enough to make a big decision or realising they can actually afford that next hire.⁠
⁠
I will probably be more excited than you are (and any excuse for some bubbly 🥂).⁠
⁠
Because behind the accountant title, I’m also a business owner.⁠
⁠
I have a team.⁠
⁠

Over 20 years as a Chartered Accountant.

Nearly 300 clients.

Spend most of my life in spreadsheets.

Still managed to turn up to my hair appointment without all of my hair extensions and once left my passport in an Airbnb in Canada 😂

Basically, I can sort your accounts, deal with HMRC and explain your numbers to you…

Just maybe don’t ask me to make you an omelette or be responsible for important travel documents 🙃

A wee reminder that Instagram never tells you the full story 😂
