As darkness settles over the forest, three animals gaze up at the night sky and wonder how they can be as confident, proud, and fearless as she is. Hearing their wishes, the sky takes the animals into her arms and, with a gentle embrace, bestows upon each a powerful and transformative gift. Author @haroldgreen brings his vibrant poeticism to this new, richly lyrical folktale illustrated with luminous art by South African designer @karabo_poppy.

I really put my heart into this; every detail. I really hope that’s felt. My goal was to create new language for the world to use when addressing Black women. I’m truly proud of this effort. Please share your thoughts and experience with the book. Happy pub day #BlackRoses 🖤🌹 by @haroldgreen

Happy Pub Day to Words are My Superpower!

All my books are special to me, but I truly believe this may be a game changer. My cousin called me in excitement and told me “this isn’t just a children’s book, this is a people book!”

In reading it aloud for the audiobook, I realized how much we ALL need the tools presented in this book. In times like these, and always, words truly are important!

I am an optimist, a light-seer, a believer in the good we hold and this book is my way of helping to bring more into that fold, young and old! 🦸🏾‍♂️ by @haroldgreen

Welcome to STORY STATION — our new series where we feature children’s books by Black authors to further spark curiosity and wonder to fuel your child’s imagination and screen-free exploration 📚!

First up: Hugged By The Night by @haroldgreen, a comforting bedtime story for children learning to overcome bedtime anxiety or a fear of the dark.

This year, thanks to the CPS Literacy Department, our culminating event for the CPS Literacy Ambassador program was an unbelievable experience at the Adler Planetarium!

Over 250 CPS students were able to explore the Adler, experience the Sky Show, enjoy a read aloud in the Star Auditorium, and my Junior Literacy Ambassadors from Barton, Beidler and New Sullivan read their original works and joined me on stage for an unforgettable Q&A!

I hope they never forget this experience, because I won’t!

Thank you Illinois Holocaust Museum for always creating such inspiring spaces! It’s always an honor to keynote the student leadership sessions.

And it’s always a gift to see Black Roses and Black Oak still making an impact. 🖤🌹🌳 taken in Illinois Holocaust Museum by @haroldgreen
