A fresh garage portrait for 2026 🫶

I am feeling rejuvenated lately. A change of scenery, a revised focus and restored balance has me excited to get after all of that work I put on the back burner for too long.

This year my camera will be chasing more human connection, more stories that use sport as the foundation and more unique takes on Athlete profiles to come 🤝

A midweek long run w/ @andy_buchanan

Last week I went and visited Andy, a few weeks after his @melbmara half win. Andy is pretty blessed with some incredible terrain around his home town of Bendigo, in Victoria’s North. It’s something that he wears incredibly proudly, a real part of is character.

I chased him around a quiet, serene landscape for a an hour before grabbing a few of these portraits. I’m really happy with these images, I’m incredibly thankful to work with athletes like Andy and for that ever increasing intersection of sport and art.

I’ll be back to cover more with Andy before he heads off to Valencia and I’ll definitely be back for the post run GYG breakfast burrito 😂 taken in Bendigo, Victoria by @harringtonstudios

New personal work with good friend @emmanuelmalou11

We shot this on a whim, a few days before Manny headed over to India to continue chasing his dreams.

I originally pitched the idea to Manny 18 months ago but with a different execution, one that would have required way more production and planning and in part I think that’s why we never got to execute that one, the dream was just too big for how little time we both had.

In so many ways I think keeping this shoot simple was the perfect way to go about it. Rolling with lose ideas over an hour or two of shooting in an incredible location.

I’m really happy with the outcome, shooting more motion has been incredibly refreshing and exciting and I’m keen to keep exploring these new avenues 💞 by @harringtonstudios

Another ripping story from Yallourn North with Gil.

Due to some monsoon weather we weren’t able to capture a lot of the footage I had imagined for this project but that’s okay, I think the best part about personal work is the ability to adjust on the fly and test new concepts.

It’s been so rewarding to work with some of these old blokes, they are true historians in their own right. On the other hand, they’re more comfortable with a Carlton in hand than being on camera but it goes with the territory.

I’ve got a few more vignettes to share from this club and then I’m hitting the road to work with others.

The Lunch Ride 🫶

I had a lot of fun self filming this little project, an ode to the Lunch Ride, an hour of power.

I originally started carving time out for a Lunch Ride after hurtling myself through one too many spider webs in the morning. Somebody else can have that pleasure.

I found structure in my day, clarity in my thoughts and enjoyed some fresh air that was absolutely necessary. I always come back refreshed, refocused and ready to be a better person, husband and business owner.

New website, new work, same Matty.

A long overdue update, new direction, new faces and unseen work. Curating work for your website is never easy. Too often I devalue the work I’ve created, whether for personal or commercial reasons, it’s easy to keep valuable work hidden.

They say time heals all and I think that is true of a portfolio. The rounds of revision, the fights over creative and the production delays all fade into history after some time, when you can objectively look at the work and be proud.

Not everything on here fits neatly into a category and I’m fine with that. Sometimes you chase images well outside your niche because you have to. It scratches an itch, closes a mental loop and it keeps you honest about why you picked up a camera in the first place.

At risk of getting too deep in the face of some pretty pictures, I’ve learned that it’s best to piss with the wind so to speak, to let others find your work as they need and to not take any of this too seriously.

Michael - Farmer & Woodworker. Yanac South

I lucked into meeting Michael, a friend of a friend so to speak. I offered to take some images of Michael whilst I was in town for his small business. He makes the most incredible pieces of furniture, in a shed where across the paddock lay his childhood home.

It’s amazing to think of how that view has shifted. From drought to fire to a field too wet to harvest, as it were that day. Land changing hands, time and time again whilst the shed stands still, a place to hone his craft.
