Trails is a compilation of tricks I have developed over the last ten years showcasing the twists and turns my process has taken.

Recently, my trick construction has been influenced by other movement-intensive hobbies: hip hop dance, climbing and cycling. I have been fascinated by how people can make simple movements look difficult and difficult movements look simple, creating a seemingly effortless display of skill.

I hope my tricks pave a trail as each part collapses and flows, winding up and down into the larger narrative. But, the real joy is the journey and the process of discovery.

Two thank you’s. Firstly, I want to thank the original caretakers for the land upon which we filmed: the Ventureño, Gabrieleño, Fernandeño, Fort Mojave, and Chemehuevi. And secondly, a thank you to Coleman for being the mastermind filmmaker behind this all. Coleman and I put intention into every facet of this video. We would recommend you watch on a larger screen with headphones during your free time. Link in bio. I hope you enjoy! by @harrisonnlee

Currently at the airport, on my way to the World Yo-Yo Contest in Himeji. My 11th (which is pretty crazy when I quickly did the math). I’ve been yo-yoing for over 15 years, it’s become such a core part of who I am - friends, community, a lot more. I’m not competing this year, but organizing Stargazing Night the night after the contest with @canopy.collection.

Stargazing is a freestyle yo-yo battle. Players go head-to-head, perform tricks to music selected by a DJ, and the audience decides the winner. It’s the third year in a row we’re organizing it, inspired by hip-hop dance battles.

When I started yo-yoing there was such a large emphasis on having your own style, creating your own tricks, choosing your own music. To fit in, you needed to stand out. As the judging system became more defined and competitors began optimizing for it, it felt like we lost some of that quirkiness. So we made an event where the audience decides, and creativity, originality, and musicality are what matter most.

The celebration of just showing up as “you” is what drew me to yo-yo in the first place. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that lesson has mattered just as much (if not more) outside of yo-yo.

A reminder to just show up as “me,” and that there are rooms where I’ll be welcomed (and now rooms I’m grateful to help build)

Looking through my camera roll in the airport lounge, here are a few moments from the last two Stargazing Nights!

Stargazing is happening again in Osaka on August 17th at Club Joule. Hope to see you under the stars :)

(Special shoutout to Coleman, Reuben, Mark, Steve, Yackle, Ayumu + many more for helping make Stargazing happen) by @harrisonnlee
