What if your first stop wasn't Google... but your library? 📚

One thing Antuan Hawkins said completely changed my perspective:

"Make the library your first resource."

Need homework help?

Looking for career resources?

Searching for reliable information?

Need a meeting space, technology, or help finding community services?

Start with your library.

If they have it, they'll connect you.

If they don't, they'll point you in the right direction.

That's what community looks like.

And the best part?

Most of it is free.

🎧 Tune in to the full episode of The Community Classroom to discover why your local library may be the most underutilized community resource we have. #linkinbio

💬 What's one thing you've discovered your library offers that surprised you? If you haven't visited in a while, what would make you stop in this month?

What if family engagement started before families needed it?

Too often, we wait until a student is struggling, a transition is happening, or a concern arises before we begin building relationships.

But the strongest partnerships are built early.

Before the first day of school.
Before the schedule change.
Before the questions.
Before the challenges.

One of the most powerful ideas from this conversation was simple: start sooner.

Because a family that feels connected from the beginning is more likely to stay connected throughout the journey.

💬 If you could redesign family engagement, what's one thing you would change?

Is it actually dangerous or am I just nervous because I'm the parent? 😂

Whew! That's a question!

As parents, we can imagine about 15 things going wrong before our child even gets started. And because we love them, our first instinct is often to say NO.

But what happens when our fears start limiting their experiences?

I asked Drew Chalfant, co-owner of HAWKs Lake Norman, how parents can tell the difference between real danger and the discomfort of watching our children take risks.

And I think this is a conversation more of us need to have.

Our job is to protect our children from harm, but it's also to prepare them for a world where we won't always be standing beside them.

That means learning when to step in, when to supervise, and when to give them a little room to figure things out.

And trust me, sometimes that last one is harder on us than it is on them! 😂

Are we protecting our kids from danger or sometimes protecting them from growing up? 👀

As a mom, I get it. I don't want my children getting hurt, making mistakes, or experiencing disappointment.

But I also tell my children every morning, “I can do hard things.” And we don't just say it. We have to actually DO hard things.

That means sometimes letting them climb a little higher, figure something out on their own, get frustrated, fall down, and try again.

During my conversation with Drew Chalfant of HAWKs Lake Norman, we talked about the difference between keeping children safe and removing every challenge from their lives.

Because resilience isn't something we can simply teach our children in a conversation. They need opportunities to practice it.

And sometimes that practice comes with muddy shoes, scraped knees, and a few tears. 🌳

Anybody else remember when the bus stop was a whole social event? 😂

We talked, laughed, played around, and somehow managed to solve all the world's problems before the bus even showed up!

Now, drive past a bus stop and you might see six kids standing six feet apart, all looking down at their phones.

During my conversation with Drew Chalfant, co-owner of HAWKs Lake Norman, we talked about what our children might be missing in a world where they're constantly connected to technology but not always connected to each other.

But here's what gave me hope: Drew says he can't tell which kids spend hours outside and which ones spend hours on screens.

Because once they're out on the trails together, something happens. They explore. They laugh. They get curious. They play.

And they're just kids.

Maybe our children haven't lost their love for the outdoors. Maybe they just need more opportunities to experience it. 🌳

🎙️ Watch our full conversation on The Community Classroom as we talk about screen time, outdoor adventures, independence, and why getting kids outside matters.

#QOTD: Parents, what's something you did outside as a child that you wish your kids experienced more often? 👇🏾

If AI can translate another language in seconds, why should our children spend years learning one? 🤔

It's a question worth asking, especially as technology continues to change how we learn, work, and communicate.

But here's what AI can't always give us: the culture, connection, humor, and lived experiences behind the words.

Think about our Southern sayings. 😂 You can translate the words, but that doesn't mean you understand what somebody is really saying!

Dr. Proctor and I got into this during our conversation on The Community Classroom, and it goes beyond bilingual education.

AI can help us communicate across languages. But understanding each other requires more than translation.

And that's something I want our children to experience, not just automate.

🎙️ Watch the full episode of The Community Classroom for more on dual language immersion, AI, and what it means to prepare our children for a changing world.

#QOTD: What do you think? With AI getting better at translation, is learning another language still as important? 👇

“But what about their English? Won't they fall behind?” 🤔

It's one of the biggest questions parents have about dual language immersion programs, and it's a fair one!

When your child is learning science, math, and other subjects in Spanish, it's natural to wonder what that means for their English development.

But here's what I loved about my conversation with Dr. Anastasia Proctor: Learning in another language doesn't mean learning stops.

Your child may be learning about the water cycle in Spanish, but they're still learning about the water cycle! 🌎📚

And Dr. Proctor shares something that may surprise parents: research suggests that while dual language students may initially lag in English, they can eventually outperform their peers in English achievement.

🎙️ Watch our full conversation on The Community Classroom as we break down dual language immersion, what the research says, and what families should consider when choosing a program.

Would you consider a dual language immersion program for your child? Why or why not? 👇

Anybody else ever look at their child’s homework and think, “I KNOW I learned this somewhere!” 😂📚

Whether it’s math we haven’t seen in 20 years or homework in a language we’re still learning, sometimes parents need a little help too!

I loved this part of my conversation with Dr. Proctor because it’s a reminder that we don't have to know everything to support our children. Sometimes the best lesson we can teach them is how to ask questions, find resources, and keep learning.

And yes, that includes pulling out Google Translate or Googling a math formula! 😂

🎙️ Catch our full conversation on The Community Classroom on @wsicnews as we talk about bilingual education, what the experience really looks like for families, and what parents should know.

Because learning doesn't stop with our kids. Sometimes we're doing the homework right alongside them! 💜

Report card season is coming, but grades only tell part of the story!

This week on Good Morning LKN, we were joined by Dr. Charlitta Hatch - CMS Board of Education, District 1 (@hatch.forcms) and host of The Community Classroom.

Dr. Hatch shared why parent-teacher conferences are about more than grades. From supporting learning at home to checking on friendships and a child's sense of belonging, she encourages parents to ask questions, connect with teachers, and support their child's overall growth.

Catch The Community Classroom Mondays at 5 PM on WSIC!

You can watch the full episode on YouTube, the WSIC News App, or wherever you get your podcasts!

What if we spent less time telling students WHAT to learn and more time showing them WHY it matters? 🤔📚

I asked the student leaders behind The Mastery Mentors what they would change about schools if they had the chance.

Their answer wasn't less homework or easier tests. 😂

They want more interactive learning and more opportunities to connect what they're taught in class to the real world.

And that stuck with me.

We spend a lot of time as adults discussing how to improve education. But how often are we asking students what would make learning more meaningful to them?

Our students aren't just the reason we make decisions about education. They should be part of shaping those decisions.

🎙️ Watch the full episode of The Community Classroom to hear more from The Mastery Mentors about math, student leadership, and what they believe schools could do differently.

#QOTD: Parents, educators, and students: If you could change ONE thing about how students learn in school, what would it be? 👇
