“Dr. @dsaunderswhite found me, and I didn’t even know I was lost.” I spoke those words ten years ago at the funeral of my mentor, Dr. White. Today, they mean just as much. #MEH3 and I traveled to @nccueagle to honor the 10th anniversary of her passing. Standing alongside @elizabethpaigeesq and @c3cilwhite, in front of the residence hall that now bears her name, I was overcome with emotion. I remembered being on that campus for her installation. I remembered the young college student she took under her wing @_hamptonu. And I remembered the woman who saw something in me long before I fully understood what I was capable of. Dr. White taught me how to lead, how to think bigger, how to navigate disappointment, how to bring others along, and how to say yes to opportunities I wasn’t quite ready to recognize. Ten years ago, I stood at her funeral wondering how I could possibly find the words to honor her. Then I realized she had spent 14 years preparing me for that very moment. Today, standing on campus with my son, I realized she’s still teaching me and her lessons are woven into the way I lead, parent, teach, and serve. I’m grateful that Mark got to be there today with her 2 children that I like to say I helped raise 🥹 He never had the chance to know her, but he is growing up with the lessons she gave me and today he got more of her through them. Some people change your life. Others change the lives of people they’ll never meet because of the investment they made in you. On September 24, we gathered to celebrate the power of "schoolanthropy"—the idea that everyone can make an impact on our public schools! Board Chair Rankin and Board Members Hatch, Witherspoon, and Stone attended the CMS Foundation’s annual luncheon, where Student Advisor Inchara represented our district brilliantly on the student panel. Last week, The City of Charlotte partnered with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for the inaugural InnovateHER event at the Spectrum Center. Over 250 middle and high school girls got a hands-on look at technology careers, connected with local employers, and learned from inspiring women in STEM. Board members Hatch and Monterrey Duvall —both of whom have backgrounds in technology—were thrilled to join, with Dr. Hatch taking the stage as a featured speaker!

With so much happening inside Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, it can be difficult for families to separate the latest headline from what is actually happening. Dr. Charlitta Hatch, CMS District 1 Board of Education representative and host of Community Classroom Mondays at 5pm on WSIC, joined Good Morning LKN ahead of Tuesday’s school board meeting to talk about the current leadership dispute and the importance of getting the focus back on students, teachers and principals. The board is scheduled to consider removing Stephanie Sneed as chair Tuesday amid questions surrounding district contracting practices and a state criminal investigation requested by Mecklenburg County District Attorney Spencer Merriweather into reported “financial irregularities.” Authorities have not publicly identified a specific person or entity as the target of that investigation. As Dr. Hatch told us, despite the “adult distractions,” students are still learning and educators are still doing their jobs. “Mommy, I’m the luckiest girl in the world because I got to be the only big girl at your meetings.” 🥹💕 Meanwhile, I was feeling guilty. Yesterday, motherhood and service collided. We went from basketball practice to the @rhopsiomega Connection & Social Action Retreat, where I shared @charmeckschools updates, to listening to community voices @publicschoolstrong @creed_nc session with basketball, lunch, the library, shopping and plenty of snacks in between. I kept wondering if I was giving her enough of me. She thought she was getting the best of me. Whew. 😭 Sometimes what feels like mom guilt to us feels like a front-row seat to them. Maybe our children don’t always need us to perfectly separate our worlds. Maybe there’s something beautiful about letting them see the whole thing. I thought she was tagging along with me. Turns out, she thought she had the best seat in the house. #MomLife #WorkLifeIntegration #FutureAKA
