[PART II]

We now know WHY need need to filter our water, this is the HOW.

This post contains (Australian) options for jugs, counter-top and showers. These are ideal for renters who don't want to touch the existing water lines or faucet, people with space restrictions or those who prefer a more budget friendly option.

Keep in mind that most jugs dont do much more than improve the taste and odour of the water, so are better suited for short term solutions or travelling. But these are STILL better than NOTHING! Ideally you would also use one that filters fluoride.

Water filtration is quite home specific as contaminants in drinking water vary, as does each persons filtration goal, budget and space limitations. If you would like some advice on filtration options please comment FILTER below

This is a whole home 3-stage water filter that I recommend (and have myself) - come with my to change the filters for my client (and friend).

Lot of people ask me ‘how will I know it is time to change my water filter?” And I always answer…OH YOU’LL KNOW. You water will basically start to smell and taste like chlorine, and likely be a different colour - that’s an indication that your filters are at capacity and need to be changed.

Don’t freak, this is so easy my and my 4 year old did it in about 5 min (*once I got these bloody canisters loosened, the plumber who installed them must have been hulk!)

Step 1: Turn off the mains water (the most important step!)

Step 2: Remove the plastic cover

Step 3: Push the red buttons to release the pressure and water from the canisters (the gauges will go to 0)

Step 4: Loosen the canisters with the empty tennis racket thingy and unscrew

Step 5: Take out the old filters and wipe out the old canisters

Step 6: Put new filters into the canisters, make sure you put the right filter into the right canister (they’re numbered) and make sure the washers and o-rings are in place

Step 7: Screw back in and tighten

Step 8: Turn the mains back on

Step 9: Run the taps inside to purge the air in the line (this will make some spluttering bubbles at the taps)

Step 10: Enjoy filtered water

Comment FILTER if you'd like me to DM you some more info.

A beautiful home means very little if it doesn’t feel good to live in.

We ask about budgets, layouts and finishes at the start of a build.
Why aren’t we asking about allergies, sensitivities, ventilation and moisture too?

Those conversations shape the decisions that follow.

They shouldn’t happen after the products have been chosen and the walls are closed up.

Health belongs in the brief from day one.

What would you change about the way we build homes?

What did you do this weekend? Glad you asked

I decided it was time for a website refresh

A little tour of Haven’s new website 🌿

I’ve made it easier to find practical ways to create a healthier home, whether you’re choosing materials for a renovation, looking at water filtration, or wondering where to begin.

You’ll find my 7 Foundations of a Healthier Home, resources for families, and ways I can support homeowners and industry professionals through the decisions that shape our indoor environments and some cheeky merch.

Take a look at havendesigned.com.au, and tell me which part of your home you’d like to feel better about.

30+ hours a week.

That’s where our kids are spending their time. In classrooms.

But here’s the thing nobody really talks about, how healthy are those spaces actually?

After their homes, school is the next major indoor environment where kids spend a huge chunk of their life.

But unlike their bedroom or living room, most parents never get to audit what’s really going on in that space.

I get it, we think about teachers, curriculum, what they’re learning. But the space itself? The building they’re sitting in? It’s doing something too.

A study of 21,000+ students found that those in naturally lit classrooms progressed 20% faster in maths and 26% faster in reading. That’s a wild improvement just from allowing natural light in.

Fresh air matters just as much, doubling ventilation improved schoolwork performance by up to 14%.

And that’s before we even talk about temperature control, what’s in the walls, water quality, acoustic treatment, how much screen time they’re getting.

It’s not one thing. It’s many things working together.
And most schools aren’t thinking about any of it.

Swipe through and see what a healthy learning environment looks like. Then if you’re curious about what your kid’s school could be, or if you’re an educator ready to make a change, let’s talk about it. That’s what I do. DM me or email pip@havendesigned.com.au

INSIDE Magazine Issue 123.
I’ve been talking about healthy homes for over 17 years. When I started, nobody else was. The conversation was about aesthetics, form, function. Health and occupant wellbeing weren’t on the table.

I was the only one (the only other person who came up when you googled ‘wellness architect’ was a PT from Utah)

When everyone from interior designers, builders to realtors is now calling themselves healthy home consultants, it means occupant health is finally on the table.

What I’ve learned from working as an architect both locally and overseas as well as at a NYC wellness tech company, to now studying building biology: it’s all invisible. Ventilation, moisture, material transparency, light as it moves through a day. Not the greenery. Not the aesthetic.

Here’s what concerns me: there’s no barrier to entry anymore. Anyone can now call themselves a “healthy home consultant” without training, credentials, or understanding how buildings actually perform. The category is being diluted faster than it’s being professionalised.

Real healthy home design requires asking deep questions about occupants, life stages, environmental exposure.

It requires a health history.

It requires understanding how a space supports the rhythms of living without constantly asking something in return. It’s about designing spaces that do their most important work entirely unnoticed, so occupants can feel at ease in their own home.

If you want to work with someone who understands how homes should actually feel, both from a design and health perspective, let’s talk. And thankyou to @marshallstudio_ for the wonderfully writen words

For years, we’ve measured a “good” home by the things we can see — location, square metres, finishes, the kitchen, the view.

But the definition of a desirable home is changing.

Wellness real estate reached US$584 billion globally in 2024, and research from the Global Wellness Institute shows that properties designed around wellness can command a premium.

We’re starting to ask different questions.

How clean is the air?

What are we drinking and bathing in?

Will I sleep well here?

Is it quiet and thermally comfortable?

What are the materials made from?

How does the lighting make me feel?

What about EMF exposure?

Does the location actually support the way I want to live?

This is exactly why I developed my 7 Foundations of a Healthy Home.
For years, these have been the framework I use to look beyond how a home looks and consider how it actually impacts the people living inside it.

And now we’re seeing many of these same considerations move into the mainstream property conversation.

But to me, they aren’t where a healthy home begins.

The real foundations of wellness are built into the home itself.

Clean air. Clean water. Natural light. Healthy materials. Moisture control. Thermal and acoustic comfort. Thoughtful technology. A location that supports everyday life.

You can’t easily undo a home that wasn’t designed with your health in mind.

Wellness at home isn’t a trend. It’s a shift in what we value …and I’ve been waiting for the property market to catch up

If you’re building, renovating or looking for your next home, start with the foundations.

Pip x
