Our final price of advice in this serious about owning a business…

Communication is key. We hear it all the time but understanding that and practicing that is another thing.

We’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way. In the beginning, while we were still building that solid foundation, the communication lacked a little. Now we follow the 24 hour rule with one another and with the amazing people we work with. Waiting to talk is never helpful, and not being upfront in a kind and constructive way, in a conversation that can give and receive will get you nowhere.

Owning 3 salons has really taught us so much both in and out of work as people. There are not two better partners that yin and yang like Haven and Mel. It takes work, it takes intention, it takes truth with yourself, and it takes a “why” that aligns to be successful at owning a business.

This partnership stands on solid ground because of the things that came along to try to crack that foundation. We can do hard things together. Life has a way of taking care of you, if you care about taking care of others 💓

How does one balance owning and operating businesses and life???

If there was one simple answer we would all be doing it but the truth is there just isn’t. It happens from messing up and pivoting and adjusting as a result of the mess up. Pattern recognition is huge and everyone’s capacity and tolerance is different.

What we do know…a healthy and partnership is a must. One founded on trust and respect and care. Self care is a must. Put your mask on first and then those around you. It’s a vital part of others success. Delegation is another huge one. We have such amazing team because as owners we don’t try ti control every aspect of the business. We are aware and we coach daily but we build leaders by giving others the opportunity to show up and contribute. It’s the only way.

We’re not perfect. We are people and we have made plenty of errors in our decisions over the 9 years but we do our best and we love our families and businesses and the people in them and with the right person by your side, you can do it all.

What would you do for your bestie???

Struggles make the good times that much better! 19 years of friendship and almost 9 years of business owning and we’ve learned to appreciate one another’s quirks. Always watching out for one another, good communication, empathy, respect, and understanding has made this relationship grow into what it has become.

Without all these things, it would be hard to push the needle forward in business.

Choosing a business partner is probably the 2nd most important decision you’ll make in life outside of a spouse. It’s a legal commitment that stays in place for many years and can make or break a person. We have heard plenty of not good experiences, but ours is one that through intention and effort, could not be better 💪

Sometimes life doesn’t go as planned in the best of ways.

The goal has always been clear and the “why’s” behind opening and running businesses has not wavered but how we got started was really just a leap of faith and believing in one another whole heartedly.

We are mom’s with drive and ambition and a little direction but mostly figuring it out as we go.

Now almost 9 years later, we have the most amazing team anyone could ask for. Along side them, we have built our company to a multi location, multi million dollar business that is performing in the very top percentage of salons across the US.

We have had to make a lot of hard decisions, pivot more than we would like, reflect, take ownership, and learn what it means to be a good leader. One thing we have really tried to get right, was demonstrating love and respect for one another, our managers, our team, and our clients.

We have more big things coming and we’re bringing our team up with us. That’s always been the goal. The people and the artistry are what make this job what it is.

This post is a tribute to marriage and to my grandparents, who just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. ❤️

I’ve had the incredible privilege of seeing strong marriages modeled my entire life. My grandparents: 70 years. My parents and my husband’s parents: 50 years. Countless other family members and friends have been married for decades and are still thriving. And I just celebrated 21 years of marriage myself.

None of these marriages are perfect. They’ve experienced hardship and all that comes with sharing a lifetime together. But I’ve watched a common thread run through them:

Marriage isn’t primarily about self.

Biblically, a husband is called to lead his family, but leadership isn’t control or getting your way. It’s servant leadership. Scripture calls a husband to love his wife as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her.

The example given to men isn’t power. It’s sacrifice.

A husband has an incredible ability to set the tone of his home by the way he loves, protects, provides for and supports his family.

And a wife has responsibilities too: to love, respect, support and encourage her husband. It was never intended to be one person giving while the other receives. It’s reciprocal.

When a woman feels cherished and secure in her husband’s love, she will move mountains for the man she knows would move mountains for her.

The strongest men I’ve known don’t see putting their wives and families first as something they’re giving up. They see it as a privilege.

Maybe that’s what we’ve lost sight of.

Marriage isn’t two people fighting for their fair share. It’s two people saying, “I’m going to take care of you,” and trusting the other is saying the same.

After watching marriages thrive for 50, 60 and now 70 years, I don’t think that longevity is an accident.

Love one another. Serve one another. Give more than you take. Stop keeping score.

From the moment I met her 19 years ago , I knew this was going to be about much more than what it appeared to be on the surface.

Every monumental thing in my life, both good and bad you have been around for. Sometimes in the shadows but many times holding me up, at the forefront in the times I couldn’t do it for myself.

I have lived so much life with you. So many experiences, celebrations, tears, frustrations, sadness, joy, gratitude, accomplishments, disappointments, and at the heart of it was always love. I’ve seen places I only dreamed of going with you, because of you.

I love your family like they are my own and you are such an important part of my own family. There will never be anyone like you in my life. I’ve met you before…long ago in another life and I will continue to recycle my soul along side yours in my next life. You are a part of me that I will forever be grateful for. One does not and can not exist without the other.

Our businesses have changed lives. The sacrifices I know feel insurmountable at times, but I know it was our purpose and our calling and God bless our families for having the patience and understanding needed to move forward in the hard times. In going after our own dreams, we have helped people find theirs.

I’m so proud to call you my Best Friend, in this life and forever. Happiest birthday to the woman that changed me for the better by simply supporting and loving me, my family, ans my dreams unconditionally.

You deserve the world. I’ve never met anyone that doesn’t love you from the moment you meet them. Your family and mine are at the top of that list. There is so much to celebrate when it comes to you.

The QUEEN of Deep Roots @haven_lin_ is another year wiser and even more beautiful than the last…how that’s possible??? We have no clue 😍

Haven helped found Deep Roots almost 9 years ago. Ground up, something really amazing from NOTHING. Her background is in business, having graduated from UT’s McCombs School of Business in 2005 and running dental practices and several of her husbands business endeavors, she was asked to come on to help organize and systematize a one month old salon.

If there is one thing we’ve discovered about Haven, it’s that she loves figuring out a challenge and that’s what this was, so she couldn’t say no!

Fast forward almost 9 years, the salon has grown from a 1 location 7 team member spot to 3 locations, a medspa, a real estate business and 80 team members! With plans to expand more in 2027!!!

None of that could have happened without you, Haven. The dedication, attention to detail, pattern recognition, being on the cutting edge of all new technologies, the ability to systematically organize, grow, execute and develop ideas, the compassion and patience you demonstrate, the insane ability you have to figure ANYTHING out before anyone else has the chance. It’s all so inspiring and admirable and not something you run into every day.

You have not just grown a company, you grew people into leaders and careers that are successful beyond measure and with your support, you taught us to see things in a way that seems attainable and possible and meaningful.

You deserve every bit of cheer, recognition, and LOVE today. An amazing mom, wife, teacher, leader, and friend.

We adore you and hope today is incredibly relaxing, special and full of LOVE and joy that you deserve.

Owning a business is not for the weak.

We are 8.5 years in to owning 3 hair salons and a medspa in and around the Austin, TX area and we have experienced a lot. One day we will sit down and talk about all the lessons but hers a little taste of some of the challenges:

Covid, a robbery, cars running into our building, a ringed tailed cat in the building, an opossum in the building, a walk out, legal matters, 5 build outs, thousands of dollars in repairs and new hvac systems, medical emergencies with clients during appointments, vehicle break ins, people stealing highlights (yes that’s a thing), extreme situations that have led to policies being put in place for very specific things (we may share one day), the absolute unexpected after a Christmas party, workers comp claims, extremely difficult decision making and quick reactionary moments have made us adaptable, malleable, and able to endure a lot.

What has come of over 8 years of lessons and pain, is something really beautiful. We have salons full of the most amazing leaders, stylists, co stylists, educators, injectors, aestheticians, and front desk associates ever imaginable. Over 75 wonderful people united with the same purpose under amazing management, all doing really incredible things.

Nothing good is going to be easy. Juggling our home life (we are both Mom’s) and the sacrifices that have to be made as founders and owners was a choice that was not easy to make. The lives we have impacted and those we have trained to impact others, and that chain that continues to form is why we do it all. We have and will continue to bring people up with us as we grow. I can’t say it gets a whole lot easier, but knowing your “why” and seeing that what you are doing is bringing a lot of good keeps us going.

The successes of the salons is because of the people in it. Nothing great can be accomplished alone. We feel this with all our hearts.

We are grateful. We are motivated to give to those who have given to our business and we are proud of all that we have done and all that’s to come.
